Hi - I'm new to this site and hoping that someone can help with some information. I'm flying LHR to LAX in 5 weeks and looking to upgrade PE to UC. I've already booked it for the return flight just wondering if Virgin do upgrades at the airport and what time if any is the best to get the best prices and what the price may be :?

VS will do upgrades at the airport, depending on availability and loads plus demand for various cabins.

This is far from assured however, and what you'll need to pay in cash or miles seems to depend on luck more than anything else - i.e., you may get a great offer, you may pay the going rate, as has been said on here many times "at the airport, anything can happen".

Hope that helps

Bear in mind it's going to depend on which code ticket your existing PE ticket is (W, S or K etc), and also availability/load on the day. As is so often the case, you might want to consider calling Virgin sooner rather than later.

Cheers.

Don't forget to check in 'manage my bookings' on a regular basis as well in case an upgrade is offered there in the meantime.

THey may also be ofefred at OLCI. Doing OLCI will not preclude you from asking at LHR. Afterall you need to secure your PE seat !

Vizbiz - ISTBC but I thought that if you upgraded for cash at the airport, it made no difference what fare code your ticket was in? In fact VS often display signs at the desks saying 'upgrades available for £xxx'

Had exactly that when we came back from Dubai. 2 for 1 offer paid around £900 for both of us to upgrade from PE to UC, bargain.

The standard case was oversold PE, so anyone was allowed to upgrade with miles or cash - saw that a few times, once had a colleague with me who was in PE on a K fare and she was allowed to use miles. Cash gladly accepted too.

Worst case scenario would have been limited availability in UC, say two or three seats, with no oversold situation in PE. I think you'd be right in saying they would let you upgrade with cash, except that upgrade with cash here would probably just be the fare difference. No chance of using miles on a K fare in these situations of course.

No, I agree regarding miles - more than once I've banged my head against the check in desk, sales desk and clubhouse concierge desk (in rapid succession) because they wouldn't even consider letting me use miles to upgrade some lowly N class tickets. Even though PE was obviously not full and Y appeared to be fit to burst. C'est la vie...
