For those of you planning to make flight connections at ORD - we arrived at ORD at approx 1430 hrs and were still waiting to clear immigration at 1710 hrs, the time of our ongoing flight to MKE. There were at least 1000 people in the hall and the queue went right out of the holding area. No air conditioning, with everyone, including many elderly, infirm, pregnant etc. passengers all left to stand for hours. We eventually cleared at 1735 hrs.

The first thought was that this massive backlog of arriving passengers was due to enhanced security at the present time in the US. This wasn't the case though, the immigration officers were no more or less thorough than usual; the problem was that only about 50% - or less - of the immigration booths were staffed and open.

Note that having missed our connecting flight, neither Virgin nor United Airlines (the ongoing carrier) were in the least bit interested in sorting out our ongoing journey, on the grounds that the problem was caused by US immigration and not them. The best we could getwas an offer of a UA flight the next morning which we would have to pay for, in addition of course to losing the cost of the flight we had booked but missed, though no fault of our own - I think most reasonable people would say 3 hours to transit was sufficient, even at ORD.

In the event we caught a bus. Not a happy experience (on top of the fact that our PE experience was ruined by the passengers in front of us who had their seats fully reclined for the whole 9 hour flight).

Did you have a through ticket on the same PNR? If so then UA should have rebooked you.

But it looks like you had seperate tickets in which case VS have no duty of care to help you. Afterall they got you to ORD on time.

But I do think the immegration experience you had was exceptional. On the 3 occassions I have been through ORD in the last three years I was through very quickly (1 on VS, I on UA (with onward) and 1 on LX)

You are right, we did have separate tickets - we only decided to fly ORD to MKE rather than hire a car, at my suggestion, because i thought it would be fun!! And yes, of course, neither airline was responsible for our missed connection.

I have through ORD about three times in the last fiveyears so not very experienced at it, but we had nothing like Wednesday's problems on earlier occasions.

I was wondering whether budget cuts had reduced the number of immigration officers, but hopefully it was a one off - perhaps everyone went down with the flu at the same time.....

This sounds very similar to my experience with ORD last year. As a regular traveller through the hell that is Miami, I can honestly say give me Miami over Chicago any day. We queued for around 3-4 hours also, Next time I'll seriously consider arriving at ORD as a
Domestic. It's the worst airport for immigration in the US I have ever come across.

The problem with ORD is that it has a huge seasonal component to its extra-US travels (VS is not the only airline flying summer months only) and summer-only flights tend to be with non-US based carriers (though AA used to do an ORD-MAN summer run). Last time I flew through there I came in right after a flight from Karachi, pretty much all passengers on that flight were in the non-citizen line and I am sure their processing is not straightforward.

IMO they simply won't do seasonal staffing for things like immigration screening, either, so in a sense you have the reverse effect of cutbacks - capacity increase with the same level of staffing of basic services. Moreover, with GOES I was through in the usual one minute, but was then stuck waiting for my case for over 30 minutes, and only through detailed knowledge of the inner workings of ORD was I able to make a connection - my bag didn't make it. I did gate to connecting plane in one hour, but that takes some doing.

In January, it was as smooth as can be and not a hassle at all - though at that time of the year immigration is the least of your concerns at that airport, I was coming in from SAN into a snowstorm and still can't quite figure out how I managed to get in and make my flight.

We flew into Ord on 2/9 and went through immigration in about 30 mins, we were in PE though so managed to get off the aircraft sharpish. I think there were a couple of big flights just behind us so we were lucky.
TR of our trip to follow but flights, hotel and Chicago were fab :-)
