A colleague has asked me to bring ber back 3 baseball / softball bats on my next US trip. I am assuming that these are 100% OK in checked baggage? (I did do a search on the VS site and it drew a blank - but given that cricket bats / hockey sticks etc are all prohibited in the cabin, but OK checked, then I assume that these are OK).

Thanks
James

yes. they need to be in checked baggage but otherwise no problems in bringing them home/

In 1990 is was a different matter. Nice lady at check-in for Ar Transat (flying YVR to LGW) allowed my friend to bring three into the cabin as long as they were taped up in a single package. No issues going through security either I recall.

Different matter now of course.

They do need to be checked but Virgin allow for an extra bag for sports equipment so you might be well advised to tuck them into a separate bag if you are at all compromised in terms of luggage space!
I hope you friend designated exactly which bats he/she wants as there are many to choose from—Dick's Sporting Goods is a large sport chain with many choices.

Done this several times as I play in a softball league, but instead of putting in them in a bag, get poster tubes to put them in and then but them in a bag unless it's a hard bag.

I agree that I hope your friend is very specific with the size and weight of the bat, even then you have bats that are weighted all along the shaft and some that are weighted at just the head.

If your friend plays in a league then it needs to be legal as there are some bats that are acceptable in the US but are illegal to play with in some UK leagues.
