I think that Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday are quieter on this route (I may be wrong). In terms of time, my sense is that the VS3 is often busy and the 1 and 9 less so. The 17 has a lot of connecting passengers, if I recall correctly.

Which class are you flying?

Mid week is usually quieter but it does depend on the time of year but NYC is a popular destination all the time so 'quiet' can be relative !

Whenever I have flown there dosen't seem to be any price difference for any of the out/back combinations (but thats not to say thats always the case) so I've always gone for what suits me in terms of getting to LHR and then back home

I'd also take into account what your eventual destination is in the US so a later arrival (VS9/17) might mean you don't get there until very, very late if you are not staying in NYC. Also factor in the choice of JFK and EWR too.

If you are a plane geek then the VS3/4 is on the new A330 (except one day of the week but not sure what day its not an A330) so factor that into your plans too !

Thanks for replies and ideas.

We would stay in NY and not travel on. Cabin would be PE as a minimum but hope to upgrade to UC using some flying club miles towards it.

When i booked my flight i noticed that the booking the VS4 made the price go up by about £20. Although i was quite happy to pay the extra to try out the A330.

I was just looking at fares for later in the year, thinking of going via JFK to try out the A333 (I live in SF), the difference in fare in picking VS3/4 over others was an extra $2,300.

Seems like i got a good deal then!

Interestingly, when i did it the VS3 was the low price fare. It was only selecting the VS4 on the return that bumped the price up.

Its worth checking frequently though as i checked over a number of weeks and the same dates in September varied from £570 return to £370 return. I ended up paying £390 for my flights. As i mentioned though i could of got the £370 fare if i had come home on the VS46 or the VS10.
