Hiya,

I posted a few weeks ago with reference to hand luggage, this subject seems to be a bit 'taboo' as I have even contacted VS directly with my query but all they send out is a 'what you can and cant carry onboard' link to their website.

Basically I want to take my SLR with me and my lenses, these all fit in a shoulder bag which weighs no more than the allowed 6kg. (they dont even weigh hand luggage at check in so have no idea where this figure comes from!)

I want to take this onboard with me due to the value of the equipment but here's my conundrum... I also want to take my iPad and a small amount of reading matter for the flight, now from the understanding i've got from VS they dont allow you to carry 2 pieces of hand luggage... in my case my slr camera shoulder bag and a satchel to carry iPad etc...

If I took my iPad and reading matter in a plastic carrier bag would this be suitable? As I understand once your through security you can buy as much as you like and take carrier bags on board from your duty free shopping!?

Completley lost with this one.... ?|

I think it really depends on the ground staff standing outside the aircraft door and probably how full the flight is. In all my flights with VS (even non-UC), I've always carried a 49cm cabin suitcase, a satchel/tote and a small handbag and I've never been stopped. So maybe if your two bags combined are still within the limit, they may let it slide, but like I said, it will depend largely on the VS staff at the door.

if you are not checking any bags then you are ok. just go straight through security.
if you are going from gatwick, just use twilight check in and then go staright through security.
if not i would suggest trying one bigger bag with it all in.

I've found that if someone is looking at your luggage, its usually with a view to checking its dimensions in one of those steel frame things. They don't tend to have the facilities to check it anywhere but the checkin desks... So I've had some 10kg bags past as long as they fit the dimensions (the weights of old laptops eh?)

Wouldn't it be nice if Virgin entered the world of real airlines and had a realistic hand baggage policy. 6kg is an absolute joke and one reason I don't fly with them for business.

The handbag (said in best Lady Bracknell tone) or the 16 kg?
