Ok, so I've got 70K miles and g/f has 30K miles, we buy an L ticket and want to upgrade to UC using the total of 100K miles taken from the combined accounts. Is this ok with VS? Or do I have to gift her 20K miles and its taken from her account?

I once asked an UC agent this and she said that a straightforward split was no problem (and in that case it was 50:50). If I were you, I'd just ring the UC line and ask them. My guess is that you will be OK, but best to be sure.

I'd double check that, as it was always understanding that as long as specific legs i.e. 20k or 25k for u/g's are covered from same account you should be fine.
eg: you pay to upgrade yourself rtn and maybe your wife one-way, she then uses her miles to UG the rtn..

I would be surprised to be able to "pool" miles generically... The example of a 50:50 split on a total 100k miles trip isn't really the same as op's situation.

Pooling miles is not allowed, but it has been known to happen ): .

Well, if pooling miles isn't allowed, the basic question (with the 75K/25K split) is that "Can I use my miles to upgrade part of someone elses ticket?", which I think is "Yes." :)

Yes you can use your miles to upgrade another persons flight.

Your best bet is the he 75/25k split, as you can't pool miles, it must be a set sector amount from an account.

There is a difference between pooling miles e.g. a 60/40k split and doing say a 75/25k split from two accounts which VS do allow and even say so on the website Can miles be combined across accounts?

The VS alterative to pooling is transferring miles (which costs)

I didn't proceed down the line, but I got the impression that the cost of transferring miles was not that far off the cost of buying those miles... Ie: Not worth it.
