Hi
I have a few hours to go until I check in for vs094. We have been placed in 57 H and K for some reason, with somebody sitting between us. The seat map is currently unavailable. When I check in will I be given the option to change seats or can I only do this on the manage booking part?
Thanks

You can ask at check in, or if doing OLCI you can take a look at the seat map again to see if anything has opened up. Otherwise if you are indeed on the Boeing 747 you could ask the pax in 57J if they would like to switch with either of you.. you have a window or an aisle seat to offer them..

Another thought, there is the possibility that the VS094 is going to be flown by one of the airbuses... if so I think I am correct in saying that 57H and K are next to each other....

I think we're on one of the refurbs. The seat map was available this morning and it showed someone between us. When you say look at the seat map can I do this when I do the online check in or when that opens does it give you the option to deselect seats as the seat map says currently unavailable.
Thankd

When you are doing online check-in, the final screen gives you options of things to do, email boarding pass, print boarding pass etc.. one of them is view/change seats. It opens the seat map that used to be in the manage my booking section. If no joy, then give it a pop at the airport check in/bag drop desk. If that fails, I would ask the person that plops down in 57J if they would be willing to swap with one of you.

Good Luck and have a good flight. y)

Thank you for the response. I read online that 40% of the seats are held until check in. Is this always the case? If I check in as soon as it opens will that 40% be available. I'm so annoyed with my travel agent, we were sat together in a row of four and then they messed around with our booking and we've now been put in these seats!!
Thanks

Not certain of the exact percentage to be honest but yes they grey out a certain number of the preallocated seats.

This is for op reasons, such as to allow families to sit together for example (or at least close by) and to give the check in staff a bit of flexibility to help people in the same groups being spread around the aircraft - at least that is what they tell us, no doubt someone may jump in soon and say that it's some kind of revenue generating scheme or something more devious.... ): ):

Yes, that is the case. All airlines are mandated to hold back 40% of seating for airport check-in and some such as bulkheads can only be assigned at the airport

Thanks for responding. Seat J came available at check in so managed to get rid of the K seat, with a bit of luck nobody will be next to us but I'm pretty sure the flight is full.
Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for the info there HL, I am curious as to who mandates that it is as high as 40%? I can understand a hold back of the bulkheads and some of the exit rows but to have 40% in each cabin is a little bit extreme isn't it...

I did read an article in USA today a while back that blames airlines withholding seats from public view to bump up revenue generation.. I think this was pay to select airlines though - so maybe a VS of the future!! :?
