Miles Upgrade

I'm off to New York on the 31st and it says I'll get the 4958 miles from the flight and received 2000 from joining the FC too. When will I actually receive these 4958 miles? And can I upgrade at the airport to PE using miles + cash?

It all depends on what type of economy ticket you have,if you go to manage my booking it will tell you the class of your ticket ,then go to toolbox and select fare codes and it gives you a breakdown of what you can and can't do with your ticket

Brilliant, Fare Code 'O'. How I managed to get a discounted ticket I don't know. It was bloody expensive!

A full fare economy ticket can easily cost £1200 which is why your O class ticket is counted as discounted.

Technically an O fare cannot be upgraded with miles, only cash, however it doesn't harm to ask on the day, although prepared for a no, or them to request you pay to move to an upgradable fare, which on the day might not be cheap.

Thanks for that Neil, as you said no harm in asking! I will be doing OLCI to try and snap one of the upper deck economy seats if I can. Bring on T-24.

Haven't been on a refurb yet but I think you will be fine if you get a seat in the bubble

Forget my refurb comment ,just realised you are going to NY but obviously there are Eco seats upstairs on the LHR 747s,are you on vs 45?

When you're at the airport though it makes no difference what fare code you're on within economy - if they are selling upgrades because of available space, they will be a fixed price - varies a bit by route, but £200-250 is fairly normal for a one way PE upgrade.

If you do an availability search on www. Flightstats.com you will get an indication but just because there may be seats available does not automatically mean upgrades will be offered.

Only letting me go to a departure date of 8th march, I fly 31st march

Okay nevermind, found it. Providing flightstats uses Business at Virgin's PE, theres 9 left it says.

To add further complication to that, airlines res systems will only ever show a maximum of 9 seats. Even if there are 49.

My first flight on Virgin was in Y to New York and I loved it. Be prepared not to be able to upgrade, but still remember to enjoy the flight!

PE is included in economy / coach - look for the number next to 'W'
But that will only give an indication. It is the number of tickets VS is prepared to sell not necessarily the number of seats available

Each class is split into a series of fare codes also called buckets.... they don't differ in onboard service offered but the T&Cs that govern them do differ - some can be upgraded with miles, some cancelled and given a full refund, some cannot be changed or cancelled etc... check out the fare codes section in the toolbox of this site for a rough guide on the terms of each fare code.

No difference. Y is an abbreviation for the whole economy cabin.

And remember that if it says W9 S9 K9 ( the three buckets in PE, it does not mean there are 27 seats. What it means is that there are at least nine seats available for sale in PE and may be sold in all three buckets. As you get nearer to the date of the flight you may see (for example) W9 S6 K0. This means that no seats are available at the K price since this is a restricted APEX fare, but that 6 seats of the at least 9 seats may be sold at the S fare price . |:)
