I've been keeping tabs on UC fares LHR-SYD in the first week of September for a month or so. Throughout this time they have been consistently around the £3k mark. Now I can't find anything under £4k. Flightstats still shows full availability in Z, I can't figure out what's going on!

Any ideas?

For reference, looking to fly out on 2/3 September, back on 9th.

Maybe there is something happening in either Sydney or Hong Kong that week that is distorting demand?

Has there been a sale on that has now ended?

There was an Upper Class sale last month, in response to a BA premium seat sale - although it was never advertised as such.

Looks like it's finished now so as ever the golden rule is if you see a good price, don't hang around because it may not be there tomorrow.

I agree.
If you see a seat you want for the price you are prepared to pay, why not just book it?

Flights to HKG are very heavily booked at the moment although I cannot figure out why.
In Sept there are several big trade shows in HKG so that may account for the UC availability. Usually HKG-SYD is pretty empty so I think it is your LHR-HKG that is bumping up your fare.

You might try looking at 2 tickets to see what that gives you (LHR-HKG and HKG-SYD) or even a less obvious route like via NRT or Shanghai.

There were familial and medical reasons I couldn't confirm my trip earlier.

Oh well, guess I may have to go back to the enemy Emirates.
