Hi Folks,

We're traveling to LAX next Monday (15th) on VS7, when I look at our booking online it's showing that we're on a B747 but looking at the "which aircraft" app in the toolbox here, all the flights on this route have been on an A340. We're traveling PE bought on airmiles and Amex upgrade vouchers. I'm a little concerned as although I have seats reserved, PE capacity on the A340 looks smaller than the B747 and worried we might get bumped down to economy?

Hi,

The VS7/8 is being operated by a 747 starting shortly for a period of time. We are flying on the 7 in August and it is a 747 for us also, so I wouldn't worry about an a/c config swap and being bumped.

PE seats on

747 = 62 (LHR)
747 = 66 (LGW)
343 = 35
346 = 38
330 = 77 (2 class)
330 = 48 (3 class)

You can tell I'm a tad bored today to have counted the seats on the seat maps !

When the airlines take bookings do they have a rough guide of the load for that route is likely to be?

Oh yes.

They have a phenomenal amount of data - not just bums on seats but who has bought which fare buckets and when and whom from etc etc

They will factor in big events into the schedules well in advance - so try getting a reward seat when the big CES conference is on in LAS for example or to LAX the week of the Oscars!

They even have route specific over booking criteria - so will likely overbook UC to NYC to a different degree than Y to MCO.

That's not to say that they don't ever mess up using this data!

WOW! :0 thats amazing! Yeah true, I can imagine that no Gs will be available during big events . So they should in an ideal world ofcourse know roughly which aircraft is likely to be used for that particular route making overbooking less likely? ?| Having said that ofcourse I think I should be thankful for an overbooking which probably led to me and the missus being upgraded on our recent trip 8D
