Hi all

I recently made a purchase through the Virgin Flying Club Shops Away site; the miles have been allocated and are currently in the “progress” stage, all well and good.
However, it seems that the amount of miles allocated to me for this transaction is incorrect. On my Shops Away history it states that I’ve been awarded 266 miles, with a total spend of £66.66. This in not correct as the actual transaction was for £79.99, the purchase was from Logo, and so my question is this………

Actual spend £79.99 X 4 = 319.96, so surly my awarded miles should be 319 as the current Lego transactions are 4 miles to the £.

I’ve read through the T&C’s just to make sure I’m correct and haven’t missed something in the small print but I don’t think I have.

Any ideas????

Thanks in advance y)

The difference between £66.66 and £79.99 is the VAT on £66.66

You often don't get bonus miles on the VAT / delivery charge (if any) element of the total price.

Flying Club miles will not be awarded on the purchase of gift vouchers or on taxes, VAT and/or delivery charges

Thanks for the replies

I must be missing something here then, it actually states, 4 miles for each £ spent on the Shops Away site. The cost of the item was £79.99, with free postage; the price is exactly the same as Toys R Us. I made purchases in the past from Currys, Comet, Superdry and B&Q and have always been awarded miles which total the actual spend, this is the first time that 20% has been dedicated to compensate for VAT.

Thanks

Bonus miles from shops away are not the same as those earned via credit card spend.

Had exactly the same happen to me when I bought a lap top from Curry's / PC World last year.

Bonus miles reflected the price without vat but the miles earned on my Amex were for the total purchase price.

Not certain if you are aware of this (or maybe you've already hit the £50 limit for the year), but the same transaction using the TopCashBack website could have netted you 882 Flying Club Miles.

I've looked around on the Forum and haven't found a topic discussing it, but for those not aware, since March 2013 most cashback earned via the TopCashBack website can be converted into Tesco Clubpoints (at the rate of 1p per Tesco Clubpoint, plus a 5% bonus), which in turn can be converted into Flying Club Miles. Granted, the whole process is slower that using the Shops Away website because you have to wait until your next Tesco statement is produced before you can convert the points to miles.
There's a yearly limit of £50 per year that can be exchanged, but with the 5% bonus that's effectively £52.50. Or, put another way, 13125 Flying Club Miles. Of course, hang onto your Tesco vouchers, wait for the annual(?) 50% bonus offer and that's a potential 19687 Flying Club Miles.

With every online purchase I've made so far, TopCashBack has worked out to be a much more rewarding way to shop than via the Shops Away site.

Some TopCashBack vs Shops Away comparisons showing Miles earned:
Love Theatre (2 x £35 tickets) - TopCashBack: 927, Flying Club Partner: 140
Apple (£440.83 purchase) - TopCashBack: 2337, Shops Away: 440
Glasses Direct (£133.55 purchase) - TopCashBack: 1769, Shops Away: 534

And don't forget, with each of the TopCashBack figures shown above, the potential is there for 50% more Miles.
Cashback rates vary. At the time of the Apple purchase, the rate was 2.02% of purchase price (less VAT) - at the moment, the rate is 3.53%.
Check the small print - some retailers don't allow their cashback to be converted to Tesco Clubpoints.
As on Shops Away, some retailers deduct VAT before calculating Cashback, others don't.
