Amex upgrade voucher

Hello folks,

Quick question about the amex upgrade voucher (Econ-PE). I think I will get two of these vouchers in early november. Thing is, I want to make the most of the current sale, and get a return to NYC for 25,000 miles.

Do any of you know whether I can purchase an Econ return for 25,000 miles (+taxes) and then use the voucher to upgrade when I get in November? Speaking to someone at flyingclub over the phone, they seemed to think the whole transaction (buying the econ ticket, and the upgrade) needs to be done together.

Pretty sure you can use the voucher to upgrade at a later date.

However there'll need to be reward availability both in economy when you initially book and in PE when you use the voucher, whereas if you do it all at once there just needs to be availability in PE.

That makes sense. Thanks, I will go ahead and book that now and look for PE availability in November.
