Safe to book single reward flight?

I am looking to fly to Orlando next July, there are currently 3 reward seats available in UC on the day I want to travel out, but nothing on the day I want to travel back. I know reward seats in UC are not common, and certainly not 3 on the same flight from GLA to MCO and I don't want to lose the opportunity to get these.

Can I book the 3 singles now, and then keep an eye for singles the other way (MCO to GLA) and book them when/if they become available.

Any dangers doing this? Assume there are no restrictions to someone in the UK buying a single from US to UK?

UC reward seats from the US to the UK tend to be much harder to come by than those in the opposite direction, so there's no guarantee 3 will ever be available on the flight you want.

What's your back-up plan? You can pay cash for one-way tickets home but be aware they could be very expensive as they'll only be available in the highest fare buckets - VS doesn't sell one-way fares in the cheapest, discounted buckets.

Are there any reward seats available for the flight home in economy or PE? If so you could grab those so you're at least guaranteed an affordable seat, and you can always use more miles to upgrade to UC if and when Gs become available.

If not, you could buy return cash economy tickets in the cheapest upgradeable bucket (M), that way you can snap up those outbound Gs now and grab any that may become available for the return as and when (or failing that in PE) while still being guaranteed a flight home at a reasonable price.

For the return, you could always do MCO - New York - London - Glasgow/Edinburgh as a back up plan.

UC tickets on the NYC-London run are far more plentiful, and Delta/Jetblue shouldn't be too pricey for the internal leg. Little Red to Edinburgh is also an option.

You would have to call VS to get that booked as a through-ticket though.

After a lot of consideration we have decided to return via New York as suggested and spend 3 or 4 days there on the way back.

We will fly from and return to Glasgow, so route will be :

- Glasgow to Orlando (VS)
- Orlando to New York (Non VS)
- New York to London (VS)
- London to Glasgow (Non VS)

When I look at the two VS flight segments online I am being offered the following upper class reward flights for 3 Adults tickets :

GLA -> MCO 150,000 miles plus £960.30
JFK -> LHR 120,000 miles plus $1249.50 (£785)

Am I as well booking these offers online, or if I phoned VS would I be able to save some taxes as they may class these as a semi-return flight?
