We're (2 of us)flying LHR - JFK at the beginning of May and seat selection will soon be avaliable.

We are scheduled for an A346 outbound and 744 inbound. I have looked on here at seat reviews, but most tend to actually have little information or are rated on something else. My requirements are a window seat and I quite like to sit a little back from the wing. I know Economy starts at the wing so we don't have much choice anyway. Ideally I'd like to get in the bubble on the way but but realise the chances are slim. Not bothered about extra legroom seats.

So looking at Seatguru, my seats of choice are:

A346

40 AC up to 42AC
41 HK up to 43HK
52 AC up to 55AC
52 HK up to 55HK

B744

44AB up to 47AB
44JK up to 47JK
50AB up to 55AB
50JK up to 55JK

Obviously I'm aiming for the bubble, but if not, the above will suffice.

So anything bad about these seats? Any that I've missed that you'd really recommend?

On a purely practical note I'd try and sit as far forward as possible, to speed up disembarkation (and therefore reduce the wait at immigration) and to increase your chances of getting your first choice of meal as they serve front to back and do run out.

Having said that, many V-Flyers highly rate rows 61-63 at the back of the 747s if you can't get the bubble as there are no middle seats.

Seat Guru is usually pretty accurate.
I shall be flying on 5th May so as long as I get a seat on the aisle over wing on the left hand side I will be happy (less prob with turbulence)! Not bothered about the bubble as I like to walk about a bit. Return I will be in PE so yet to decide on where I'd like to be then :-) if I get a choice!

Seat selection has become available. I am trying to click on the seats that we want which are showing as available and then when I click on submit it tells me they are unavailable. I thought maybe someone had taken them in that time but they are still showing as available.

What's going on?

That's normal, and means you're not quite at T-60 yet. The seat map opens a few hours before you can actually request seats.

I see you're flying on May 1st, in which case T-60 is tomorrow. Try again after 8am, when seat requests open, and you should find it'll work.

If you remember to do it dead on 8am, you're pretty certain to be the first to choose and will have pick of the bunch although remember a number of seats are never available to request until check-in so they'll appear on the map as taken.

Thanks for that, I was getting worried!

I'll set my alarm for tomorrow (sad, I know). Our seats are showing as available now so hopefully tomorrow we won't find they have been held back.

Confirmed 43H & 43K outbound.

Can't see any negatives in those seats apart from proximity to toilets (2 rows behind us), but seats further back are the narrower ones apparently, so it's a sacrifice I'm happy to make.

Seat booking is open now (annoyingly opened a day early so no bubble seats :(! )

The rows at the back that are just two seats, they still have a window don't they, but there's a gap for the 'shelf'? And if there is a window, is it far enough away that there's no point it being there? I NEED a window! Or would be just better off picking something a little further front and have a stranger sit next to us?

How likely is it they'll run out of your meal choice in these seats?

If you're flying on May 6th, T-60 is today!

It's quite common for the bubble not to be available to request in advance. I believe on quiet flights they don't always use the economy half. Keep checking though, just in case they randomly decide to open it - and of course anything can happen when OLCI opens.

As for meals running out at the back, yes that is a real risk. It would be a huge waste (and unnecessary cost) to load one of each meal for every passenger just in case, so if certain choices prove popular they do run out.

OK, thanks for that. I am going to keep checking the bubble and hopefully I can get in there!

What about the window questions?
