So here is an update on what happens to the tier points value at the end of an earning zone.

I finished my earning year with 36 Tier points. 4 short of the 40 I expected I needed and the total that was shown on my account for Gold renewal.
Amazingly my Virgin Gold status did actually get renewed for another year and I was awarded a companion ticket!!! I was quiet surprised but then wondered if the old limit of 30 tier points was still in place? Either way it was a nice surprise and I already have two trips booked to start earning again.

Finally I can confirm that my total tier point value did reset to Zero for this year, and I am back to earning again, my profile states I need 40 to regain gold.

Thanks for all the comments and I hope the confirmation that resetting to zero has answered some other peoples query.

You say 40 to regain gold, but if you are still gold then presumably that just means you need the normal 40 to renew next time -- and I think we are all in agreement that that is right.

As regards your surprise renewal, can I ask a question? If you go back 12 months-ish from the date of your last TP, had you accumulated 40 (albeit with a few not in your last renewal year)?

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but hope this can be of some help having just been on the phone to VS this morning to try and clarify my own situation...

My silver membership year is due to expire on June 30th, by which time (including future pre-booked flights) I will have acquired 16 points (ie I will JUST have reached the threshold for a silver renewal - phew!)

I've been told that the 1 extra tier point will not roll over into my new membership cycle and I will be reset to 0 tier points. The interesting thing might be that all of the tier points I've earned in this cycle have actually been in this calendar year (ie all in 2014) so time will tell as to whether I only need to earn another 24 points in the ROLLING year (ie Jan 2014 - Dec 2014) to achieve Gold status.

Hope this doesn't confuse the situation, I just thought some up to date "real world" info, having also spoken to VS, might help clarify other people's situations.

I'm happy to keep you guys updated with what happens to my tier points over the next few months, I'm also happy to keep out of the way and stop boring people with my own situation!!!

Happy flighting.

Hi Mr G,

You are correct, you only need 24pts by end of December to gain gold, you can check this yourself on the VS website, login to FC, at the bottom of your account summary page is a going for gold calculator --- if you change the dates month by month you will see what you need to gain gold and by when :)

Thanks Hitman. I hope you're right (and I suspect you are) except the slightly frustrating thing is the lady at VS said all tier points were reset and would be discounted once I got into my new membership year. The only reason I say it's frustrating is the mixed messages that seem to surround this fairly simple question, and the fact that I've now booked a reward flight which on one hand has saved me money, but on the other means I won't earn (much needed) tier points.

When on the phone I told the agent that I was looking to build my tier points and book some flights at the same time, all of which would be within my current membership year and the gist of the conversation seemed to be "you're set to renew your silver membership, don't worry about that, and equally, don't waste any money trying to earn tier points when they're going to be lost." I was prepared to pay to earn (and fly!) and surely they'd want to take my money, but instead I ended up saving a lot of cash which is great, spending a lot of miles which is what they're there for, but ultimately through (probably) duff information, not quite getting what I wanted/was prepared to do.

Anyway, moan over and lesson learnt. We'll have to see what the magical "going for gold" calculator says in a few weeks...

Keep up the great work on the site everyone, it's a great information tool and I look forward to being able to contribute more as my own knowledge and experience increases.

I'm fairly sure I am correct, I have just checked my history going back almost 10 years and that is how it used to work for me, you don't have to wait for a few weeks to check this , by changing the dates on the calculator now the TPs will drop off the total required [for gold] 12/13 months after you first earned them --- additionally if your upcoming flight is in economy upgraded to PE or UC have you registered for the latest economy offer [extra2pts per sector + 50% more miles]?
