I think this is catch 22 for virgin, as like it's already been mentioned, it was introduced a few years back due to complaints of there not being a hot breakfast in PE.
Sgilly74- I think you must have encountered a bad batch of breakfasts that had been produced. Whilst I agree that a hot breakfast on a plane is never going to be the standard of a home cooked one, I can honestly say that the hot PE breakfast is edible and definitely not foul, and this comes from somebody who probably nibbles on one every time I go to work. That's why I think yours must have been from a poorly produced batch.
In my opinion I don't think there's need for a hot breakfast on an east coast flight, especially the shorter ones, as it's two hot meals too close together. I think a decent quality continental breakfast would be more than adequate for the shorter overnight flights but that's just my humble opinion.
