I'd never leave it unattended, risking losing it/forgetting it/having it stolen, and need the tag so someone could identify the owner..
Ahem! You obviously didn't read my TR of a VS flight to YVR where I suffered a major Embarrassing Incident.
To put it briefly, I left my carry-on at baggage claim in LHR when I picked up two checked bags from my flight from Cork. I was leaving one in LHR rather than haul two of them over to the hotel where I was staying overnight prior to my flight the following day. While I was checking that bag into the left baggage area, my phone rang. It was security saying that they had my bag and I was re-united within minutes. How had I been identified? I had my FC baggage tag on and a quick call over to T3 had resolved matters quickly.
Like you, I thought I would never leave my bag unattended and generally speaking I don't, but in the hassle of getting two bags instead of the customary one, I did. When the call came, I hadn't even realised I had forgotten it and was re-united it before I had had time to panic about losing it. The guy in security was most complimentary about having a baggage tag and said that so many carry-ons that get left behind, don't have any ID on them and a fair amount do get left behind just as mine was. Maybe he was being kind because I was completely mortified at my error, but I don't think so. I started looking at carry-ons after that and a large number don't have any labelling unless it's on the inside.
