Thinking aloud...
I've been tempted by the BA CW sale (especially ex-EU), but I've got a bunch of VS miles to burn, so I phoned up to verify M-G prices.
There are quite a few LON/NYC M-G UC r/t fares coming in around £800-850 in the New Year...bagged a couple myself!
But I figured that +/- £1k BA CW + hassle of positioning flight to DUB/ORK (and wondering whether to actually take the fourth leg, as I've done this trick too many times) isn't as good as £800 + net VS miles usage of 22.8k (40k less earning 14k on the M, less 3.2k Black VS Amex card).
Anyway... just a reminder when looking for G availability to look for two sets of one-way tickets, rather than one round-trip ticket.
The new(ish) flight availability interface still misses off G availability (frequently it's the return leg missing the info) when searching for a round-trip ticket.
Also strangely, sometimes the colour bars don't actually reflect G availability (i.e. no purple bar showing UC tikets, but when you click on the date, there is actually availability - often only one flight that day).
Best advice (mentioned repeatedly by others here): phone up FC!
