Hi all

Newbie here, please help. I've a PE ticket LHR-Shanghai in March and looking to upgrade using my miles. Trouble is its a Saturday flight and doing a dummy booking, the upgrade tickets for Saturdays never seem to be available. I know it depends on load factors - a load list from flightstats seems to have 9+ seats in UC at the moment. Anyone managed to bag an upgrade before the day? Flying Club just say keep checking. Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome.

The advise to keep checking really is good, if the loads are still looking fairly empty then there is a good chance they will release some miles seats close to the flight. They could still do it at any time though, so do check on a daily basis.

I assume you are either on an upgradable PE fare code or know you will have to pay to move to one for you to upgrade with miles?

Thanks Neil. S ticket outbound. Ive been watching load lists and even when checking on a Friday with 9 seats showing, there has been no reward seats available for the Saturday. Thats why i wondered if Saturday seats werent released. Fingers crossed for the day I suppose

If all else fails, get to the airport early, go to the ticketing desk (not check in) and ask if you can use miles to upgrade there.

If there are still UC seats empty, they're often happy to fill them at that point, particularly if Y and PE are busy and it means otherwise they'd have to resort to op-ups.

Needless to say, though, it's not guaranteed and you should absolutely keep checking for Gs online - daily if you can. They can, and do, appear at any time.

Hi Claret

Welcome :)

Don't give up hope! y)

I'd been checking for a couple of 'G's outbound & inbound for LGW - MCO frequently (twice daily) & low & behold in the past week, the Code Fare Fairy has released 3 out of the 4!

Keep trying dummy bookings & you could be lucky. If not, it is worth asking at the ticket desk on the day.

Happy flying & do remember to post your TR y)

Thanks Roxy. Fair bit off yet, so not despondent. It's just I've never seen Saturday flights on the Shanghai flight available as a spend miles option. UC on that flight is good in view of the 12hr trip. 2 previous trips to PVG were midweek and I managed to use my miles to upgrade.

Spoke to Flying Club and UC is looking fairly full on my flight. Might be fingers crossed for an upgrade on the day. If not, has anyone any seat recommendations for PE on the A343? Thanks in advance

..and it is mentioned regularly so you probably know … but you do need to be on S or W PE fare to be able to use Flying Club miles.

Result. Checked in at Manchester for Little Red to LHR and onward to Shanghai. Asked if there was any chance of an upgrade. Of course Sir came the reply. 12500 miles lighter,an additional £61 in taxes and big smiles all round.

Great result - enjoy :D

You should just about be entering the LHR clubhouse now?

Shanghai is one of my favourite cities, it is both dynamic and safe.
I travel on business 6/8 time per year and know it backwards, make sure to visit restaurant 1221, and a must is the incredible Sunday champagne brunch at the Weston hotel, free-flow Verve Cliquot champagne [or any other drink/cocktail] food from around the world from caviar to curry, opera singing, magicians, Chinese circus, dancers etc
Shanghai will intoxicate you!!

HK7s kick off next Friday -- if you like your Rugby book ASAP, if you don't like Rugby but plan to visit Hong Kong avoid next week-end ---- it will be manic and grid locked

Have a great time

You mean they phoned you out of the blue, or had you been calling them repeatedly so they remembered your request?

They called me out of the blue, had calls from pre flight before but the numbers they were talking was always way more than £87, nearer £600 normally but then again I did have a S ticket this time round :)

That's a fantastic price for LAS - well done. I guess they must be oversold in PE and/or Y. I'm surprised they didn't quote a higher price though -- doesn't seem like a triumph for revenue management, but what a great result for you! :)

Well it's that time of year. Booked Manchester to Shanghai in PE on an S ticket. Here's hoping for an upgrade to UC once again. How come its cheaper from MAN-PVG (via Little Red) than LHR-PVG on same VS250 flight?

In the same position, on an S waiting for an opportunity for a G to Hong Kong. FC helpline says that traffic is heavy going east this spring, but loads are pretty normal I think. FC agent indicated (without promising) that opportunities will be available in due course - but we have to be patient.

(Getting a G for return was easy.....)
