I expect a lot of "dog ate my homework" stories now to avoid EU261. I cannot believe that there would not be a spare captain.
It was like that when I got here, Sir!

There are only 2 flights a week at the moment to/from CUN and VS (or any other airline really) is not going to have an expensive pilot there on a stand-by basis.
It would be different if it was in the LGW-CUN direction where VS could resonably be expected to have crew on stand-by.
Huzzah for International Jet-setting !

The most they could do would be to ship a captain over from Miami or one of the Caribbean islands but that would have a knock-on effect for those destinations.
There was someone complaining on the VA fbook page about how their honeymoon had been ruined by the delay because they were stuck in a hotel in a nice hot destination for an extra day...
The Virgin staff responded that it was due to the captain that was supposed to fly them home being ill, so they had arranged a 'minimum rest' for the captain from another flight so he could take over the next day.
Pretty sure I'd rather have a delay and fully functioning captain for such a long flight!

Their honeymoon was ruined by being a day longer? Doesn't bode well for their marriage...
