Will bags be checked through?

We have booked EX-BRU flights to LAX and I'm now worrying about what will happen.

Our flight from BRU-LHR is the day before our LHR-LAX flight so will we be able to travel "hand luggage only" from BRU-LHR and then check-in again at the Virgin counters at LHR the next morning in order to check-in our luggage?

Similarly, on the way home our LAX-LHR flight is the day before our LHR-BRU flight: I assume when checking in at LAX the agent will not tag the bags through to BRU so that we can collect them at LHR?

The acknowledged wisdom on the forum is that:
1. You'll be able to travel hand luggage only on your first leg and then rock up to VS checkin next day with your luggage for the hold.

2. You'll need to ask the agent at LAX to check your bags only to LHR and it shouldn't be a problem but if challenged you have a legitimate reason as you have an overnight layover.
