Read messages frequently but new to posting.

Son booked on long haul flight with Air France changing in Paris. Outward sector flown.
Due to return home in 4 weeks and does not want to take last leg of trip to Manchester as wishes to meet some friends. Any change is £250.
To avoid charge, can he ask for his luggage to be checked just to CDG? More specifically, can they refuse his request? If yes, what happens to his luggage?
Thanks for help.

Hi and welcome.

He can ask and he may well succeed but technically the airline is contracted to deliver luggage to the destination the passenger paid for.

Some airlines (including VS & BA) have started cracking down on short checking luggage by either refusing to do it or charging extra.

He could just not catch the onward.

But If it's not short checked then when he fails to board it will be off loaded.

What happens then will be down to AF. I don't think they would have any obligation to have it delivered to his home address. It's not like they lost it.

Equally they can make it very difficult to reclaim it in Paris.

Avid just a thought how is he going to eventually get back to MAN and how much will that cost?

On AF to SXM last year 3 of us were booked LHR-CDG-SXM and return but 2 did not want to take the last CDG-LHR on the return leg as they fancied a side-trip to BRU then back later on Eurostar. They were quite sniffy about it at SXM on checkin and sent us across to ticketing saying we would have to pay US$400 each so US$800 in total for the 2 that wanted the change. At ticketing they were quite a bit friendlier tagging two sets of luggage through on one of the names to CDG only for a total fee of US$100.

So it can be a bit dependent on where you are flying back to CDG from, who you get on checkin and if they do send you to ticketing then who is serving you there - being polite & friendly at all times while asking them what they can do to help you can pay dividends .... worst case look in advance what it would cost to take the last leg CDG to MAN, dump any unwanted luggage with you at airport and jump on a new round trip MAN-CDG return flight (and if lots less than £250 maybe book that).
