If one person has 49,000 in their FC account and the other 51,000, can they get two upgrades costing 100,000 points together? Or does it have to be 50,000 from each FC account?

Worst case scenario you can transfer the miles from one account to another, which is marginally cheaper than buying miles, but did seem ridiculously overpriced the one time I looked at doing it. Costs started from about £25 but that was a while back. Not that that really answers your question.

Not sure but I think you need to have sufficient miles to cover each leg in each account so 50-50 for UC return. I stand to be corrected!

No - mileage cannot be pooled so each upgrade costing 50,000 miles would need to be paid in full from each account .

I have never tried an ex-DUB or similar VS flight but looking at the prices, they do seem comparable to a M to G upgrade and this leaves me questioning if collecting FC miles is worth the effort? I can use my credit card spend to top up Avios for BA reward flights with my Amex 241. We shall see.

My local airport has flights to DUB which may actually be easier than driving up tp London. I would use the return flights to get back to my home airport so seems a logical option, though I do prefer direct flights.

We had to buy 1,000 miles (minimum allowed) to add to one of our flying accounts to make up to 50k in order to get a M fare. Only cost £30 so we thought it was a result.

As for the ex-Dub fares, it's about personal choice and very popular with v-flyers. However I just couldn't deal with the hassle of the extra travelling and will continue to collect miles and buy extras if required but one day perhaps.....

That's a jolly expensive way of getting 1000 miles as the miles are only £15, but another £15 transaction fee, but if it's last minute then no option. But if you can plan ahead things like miles booster is a cheaper way of buying them .
Even though I'm not short of miles I can't resist calculating the cost. Taxing my car on line there is a £2.50 charge for using a credit card, but that £2.50 gets me 500 miles to go in the pot for 2018.
