Hi all

Some advice needed if possible please, just booked myself and my grandson on LHR-JFK return for June 2017. I had to call the flying club as you can't book flights for children on their website at the moment. They charged me the full cost including taxes for my grandson, who 10 years old and said they can't work the tax cost out at the moment, the person on the phone did give a reason but I can't remember what it was. They told me once it's all paid for I would be reimbursed the tax for my grandson, I asked how much this was but they couldn't tell me, do any of the experts on here happen to know how much I should be getting back???

This all seems very strange to me! How on earth I'm supposed to know how much I should be getting back is beyond me. Is this typical of virgin? Anyway, if someone could let me know roughly how much I should be getting back once the tax is returned I'll be able to keep an eye on this and work out if it's correct.

Thanks in advance for any help and hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say, I'm getting confused just thinking about it!!!

Thanks

Trevor

They were talking about APD which for Economy is £ 75.

As far as I know all the other fees such as airport charges and the VS fuel surcharge (not a tax despite what they say) are the same for a child as for an adult.

Finally finished my wrapping so have time to reply.

tontybear is right in that the major difference is the APD, however it does seem that Virgin have loaded different adult and child fares.

ITA matrix is suggesting:

Adult

Fare 1: Carrier VS OKW46PMG LON to NYC (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code O
Covers LHR-JFK (Economy)
£65.50

Fare 2: Carrier VS OKW46PMG NYC to LON (rules)
Passenger type ADT, round trip fare, booking code O
Covers JFK-LHR (Economy)
£65.50

United Kingdom Air Passenger Duty Apd (GB) £75.00
United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge Departures (UB) £41.47
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) £3.20
US Immigration Fee (XY) £5.70
US Customs Fee (YC) £4.40
VS YQ surcharge (YQ) £203.00
US International Arrival Tax (US) £14.40
US International Departure Tax (US) £14.40
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) £4.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) £3.60
Subtotal per passenger £500.67

----------------------
Child

Fare 1: Carrier VS OKW46PMG LON to NYC (rules)
Passenger type CNN, round trip fare, booking code O
Covers LHR-JFK (Economy)
£49.13

Fare 2: Carrier VS OKW46PMG NYC to LON (rules)
Passenger type CNN, round trip fare, booking code O
Covers JFK-LHR (Economy)
£49.13

United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge Departures (UB) £41.47
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) £3.20
US Immigration Fee (XY) £5.70
US Customs Fee (YC) £4.40
VS YQ surcharge (YQ) £203.00
US International Arrival Tax (US) £14.40
US International Departure Tax (US) £14.40
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) £4.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) £3.60
Subtotal per passenger £392.67

---------------------

That looks hard to read but basically the adult fare is a tiny bit (£65.50 each way) greater than the child fare (£49.13 each way) and the major difference is that the adult fare requires £75 APD while the child fare does not.

Total refund due should be in the order of £108

The exact amount will depend on the fare class (there's more granularity than just saying you booked Economy) and dates you booked.
