Cancelling Black Card

Hi All,

I'm very tempted to cancel my black Amex/Visa. I've gathered up enough miles for my trip next year (still need to book), and as my little one is about to embark on school, I figure the odds of getting suitable reward seats at a time and route that suits in minimal. Feel like being naughty and going down the Avios route (I know, I know) which I think will offer more benefits (I live in Belfast so even the Belfast-London flight could be paid in Avios)..

My concern is that with Virgin/MBNA having stopped these cards now if I get out, I cant get back in again.

I've literally just paid the £140 fee. Can I get it back (pro-rata) if I cancel?

No pro rata refund available, but mbna have lost the card rights and its going to Virgin Money, i think the new card is due to be announced any time now.......

No one knows what will happen to MBNA cardholders, maybe moved to a standard MBNA card/offered pro rata refund if closed, will just have to wait and see

If there's no refund available, I might as well hang onto it!

A month or so ago I rang up to cancel (hoping to get a retention offer) and asked about a partial refund. After being put on hold was told yes, and they said a note on this would be left on my account.

Perhaps with the card on its way out they are more lenient?

I remember going through the last card provider change with the VS card.

Last time they switched card providers (from Virgin Money to MBNA) they migrated accounts across the card providers (basically they just did a balance transfer from Virgin Money to MBNA and offered the same credit limit and APR etc you had previously).

Worth nothing as well that the VS card going back to Virgin Money is still only speculation at the minute and is not yet confirmed.
