Morning all,

Wondered if I may ask for some advice/guidance on the best use of my airmiles?

Currently I have 135,000 and want to take my first Upper Class flight with my partner. We are looking to go to Mexcio 2019 and knowing Upper Class rewards are scarce on the 747, will be looking to book May of this year when they are first released. My thinking is, book one way tickets from LGW to CUN in Upper class, costing 95,000 miles and £706 in taxes going out. Then, booking a one way economy miles and using my upgrade voucher to fly PE on the way back, costing me 25,000 miles and roughly £320 in taxes (depending on US$ exchange)

My question would be, is this the best use of my miles? Would anyone have any better ideas/suggestions? Any helpful tips would be greatly received.

It will depend very much on your flexibility and what is available.
Personally I prefer Upper on the way home if I can only do one way. Some would argue it is better to do it on the outbound leg and enjoy the experience rather than sleeping through it, but I'd rather have a flatbed on a night flight.
We are having an extra day in a B&B after we leave the apartment because there were seats in Upper on the Sunday.

Hi Dick D,

Thank you for your response. I can be really flexible during pretty much the whole of April. I know what you mean about a bed on the way back, but as I can only do one way, think i've decided i'd prefer to do it outbound to enjoy the clubhouse and the overall experience.

I managed to bag 3 upper class rewards seats on the outward journey to Cancun for August 2017, I would always plump for doing it that way for the reasons you state.

We're going back this August flying out in Economy returning in PE - they are only operating one flight a week during August 18 so count myself lucky to have got reward seats at all.

We had a similar dilemna last year when trying to decide on our honeymoon this summer. We had approx 200k miles between us and wanted to go upper for the first time somewhere on the west coast USA. With my better half being a teacher we were even more limited with school holidays and even less availability.

Thankfully managed to get our prefered option going out in upper to SFO, back from Vegas in PE also using the upgrade voucher which pretty much used up all the miles we had.

I think for first timers such as ourselves going outbound westwards in upper is the best way to enjoy the whole experience. From my countless searches it seems the night flight back to the UK has a lot less availability anyway.
