Looking at some advance planning for a possible trip in autumn 2019 or spring 2020 over to Australia.

The plan is to use a combination of Avios and VA Miles for the trip, ideally flying out from the UK to Beijing (Avios), onwards to Australia (Cathay Pacific using Avios), then returning to the UK (MAN) via SIN on Singapore Airlines. Alternatively, we could fly back via New Zealand on Air NZ (if we can redeem VA miles).

To get me started and to work out how many VA miles I will need, is it as simple as checking Singapore Airlines Kris Flyer availability or Air NZ rewards availability, then it being a straightforward like for like number of VA miles? Somehow I suspect not, but I live in hope!!!!! :D

Do you mean Virgin Atlantic (VS) or Virgin Australia (VA) miles?

If it’s VS, the spending table on Singapore Airlines (SQ) can be found here

The availability of rewards flights for Flying Club on SQ can only be determined by phoning Flying Club.

You said VA but I assume you are referring to VS again? You wouldn't transfer VS miles to Krisflyer. If you look at the chart linked by mitchja you'll see that's how many miles are needed to get between those points. You'd need to calculate each segment of your journey, which can consume a lot of miles because as you know it will take a few connections to get to Australia. However you're using VS miles and booking everything through VS. Also, FYI, you cannot book business or first on SQ's A380, A350 or 773 and they use those aircraft quite a bit on flights to Europe.

I've flown SQ business from Oslo to Melbourne and it was significantly cheaper than flying from the UK so if you don't use miles check out Oslo or Stockholm as alternatives. You could also use VS miles to get to HKG and some other combination of Avios to land in terra australis.

Enjoy, it's a beautiful country!

We are flying to Aukland on SQ Business Class return and have chosen to fly from Copenhagen in late Dec (returning Feb) which cost us £2.5k each . Much much cheaper than from LHR. We live up north so flying MAN across to Copenhagen is only 2 hrs and if we flew to LHR it is an hour anyway - so a no brainer for us.

Always worth a look at alternatives. :D

Thanks again everyone - I really must remember to differentiate between Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Australia!!!!

Seems as if the plans for a Business Class seat may be scuppered, as having had a play around with different flights, I was hoping that we could fly back MEL-SIN-MAN, but it looks as if at least the leg to MAN is A350 operated .

However, PE wouldn’t be the end of the world (for me, at least!!)
