I'm planning a trip to Florida with my friend. Both of us have enough miles for our flights, but I have a companion reward, and an upgrade voucher on my account from my MBNA card. I want to know the best way to make use of the rewards we have. My friend is quite keen on using her miles, but I'm happy to save mine if there is a better deal, or if we can make use of my vouchers.

I'm getting conflicting advice on the phone and on Virgin's online chat regarding what I need to do to use these rewards.

So I'm looking for some advice from people that have been through the booking process on the following, to either answer my questions, or confirm/correct the statements.

1) To use the companion reward do I need a cash ticket or can I pay with miles? I've been given conflicting answers.
2) I can only use the premium upgrade on a ticket I have bought with miles, but I can split it so that two people can upgrade one way. If I do split the upgrade, do both tickets need to be paid with miles?
3) I can't use both rewards at the same time.

Any help you guys can provide would be much appreciated! And if you have any other tips!

The MBNA companion voucher required you you pay for a cash ticket but it was the higher fare buckets in each cabin.

Yes you can split it so it’s two single upgrades rather than one return. Yes both need to be with miles, however, they need to be YOUR miles. So let’s say you have enough miles for an Economy return to MCO. You can in effect buy both yourself and your friend a single ticket to Orlando in Economy with miles then upgrade it to Premium using the voucher.

3) I can't use both rewards at the same time.

Correct as per question one, you must buy a cash fare for the companion and you can’t buy a cash fare to use the upgrade!
