Flying LHR - LAX then LAX-LHR next month on reward flights

I was hoping to fly into or out of LAS, but it doesn't look like that will happen, so I was looking at Delta rewards for a connecting flight at either end of the trip so LAX-LAS or LAS-LAX but worried about layover etc - both showing availability on the Delta site.

Anyone with experience of this just wondering which leg of the journey would be best to add the internal flight to? The inbound or the outbound and realistically how long would I need whilst minimising layover?

And would they be able to merge the booking so that should VS flights be delayed I could be moved to a later internal?

Going out VS7
Returning on VS24

Hope that all makes sense.

Are those DL flights you can see showing as available VS reward flights?

If not, you wont be able to add them onto an existing reward booking as I believe you can only add further VS reward flights onto an existing VS reward booking.

If you make separate bookings, there's no way to merge bookings either unfortunately. All the flights need to be ticketed by the same airline on the same booking to get delay/cancelation protection. Whilst both DL and VS may well help you out if something does go wrong, they are under no obligation to do so.

For separate bookings I wouldn't want less than a 3hr layover.

Thanks, James, that is helpful - unfortunately only showing on Delta - think I may just end up driving as think it could be quicker.
But will give Virgin a call tomorrow and discuss my options - can see a reward flight back 24 hours later but involves a stopover in Boston but the flight to Boston is on DL metal.... so this makes it tricky as used a companion voucher.......
