I don't believe so. If I was looking to do this change, i'd be expecting to pay roughly the difference between the inbound fare you have and the new price.

The exceptions to this would be if you're making a change that requires the inbound to be repriced (if it has not been taken), i.e. you're trying to combine fare buckets that cannot be combined but thats a rarity. (Full details on that in the terms of the ticket).

That's my experience of doing this anyway.

There used to be a nifty little loophole (which still sort of works but is much worse value now) whereby you could upgrade a flight to Upper using points, that segment then became a G bucket reward sector and then you could move onto other flights that also had reward seats available without triggering a re-fare. This was also a way of circumventing the Saturday night rule as well.
