So, with July rapidly approaching, obviously the smoking areas in the LGW/LHR clubhouses will be gone.

Not sure what they can do. AFAIR there is no smoking in the roof garden at LHR and anywhere air-side would have to be open-aired to comply with the law. All I can see is a designated area land-side somewhere.

My favourite seating in the LHR CH is behind the bar area, which also happens to be half of the smoking area.
As a non smoker I usually have to sit at the bar and wait for a seat to come free in the smoke free side. I might be able to get a seat without waiting after July 1st...

Speaking (oh, well then, writing [ii] ) as someone who has lived with the smoking ban for three years since its inception over here one of the biggest problems is running the gamut of smokers outside public buildings as they merrily puff away. You can smell them yards away so you could still smell them from Slough.
A study just completed over here has shown that there is a significant improvement in the health of workers in places like pubs since the introduction, but a word of warning fo one of the downsides of the smoking ban, especially in pubs.......

Well, the sentiment is right - however as a wee smoker I find the little smoking room at the club house an absolute haven of civility in this increasingly mad world. I will be sad for it to go, but totally agree with all the sentiments that it is right to go, and life will be more pleasant for many.
Hope that all our foreign visitors know what's happening before they get stuck airside (btw that's one of the things I like about JFK/SFO/EWR is that the Clubhouse is landside, so one can nip out for a smoke ...

As the smoking area in the CH is, as Bazz said, in one of the best spots in the CH I will be very pleased to see it go. I too have never seen the point in smoking, but if you apply that logic of breaking something down into what it really is, you have to worry about the person who first discovered cow's milk

Well if they ban smoking in the CH I am done with LHR, with the mess that is LHR security you have to get there so early I will just plan my flights around the place, STN was great in this regards.

True, bit at STN you don't have to stand in line for an hour to get through security and then race to the other side of the planet to get to a gate, fast track at STN works well, it takes maybe 5-10 mins from there to the gates...all in all another reason not to go through LHR if you get where I am coming from.

Yes it also includes company cars which are used by more than one person.
Just a quick question - don't know if there are any immigration experts on here, but when you're airside and thro passport control aren't you sort of in no-mans land having perhaps left the country aleady???
Plus another observation if there is going to a complete blanket ban then I can see a lot of smokers leaving it till the last minute before confining themself either air side or on the plane and that could well lead to more delays for us why they try and find them or their bags.
Not that I'm saying it's right but just a couple of thoughts.

I don't think so Ade as it is patrolled and manned by UK police etc.. rather like the aircraft is UK soveriegn territory.
