Hi All,
We flew upper back from MCO on Friday and hubby's tv didn't work. The FSM offered him a dvd player but he had seen all the movies and didn't care to again, so he declined. Also the shelf/cabinet (?) that pushes down into the pod would not stay down hence I had to swap with him as he almost cannot lay down with it still up. He's a big guy lol.
The FSM said he would file a report and we would receive miles without the need of a complaint letter. What do you seasoned professionals think is an acceptable amount of miles for compensation?

I got 15k miles when my table wasn't working, but the FSM authorised that on the flight and told me about it there and then.

Not really - if the FSM has done his report (which I am sure he will have done) then the miles will already have been recommended by him and thus in the process of being awarded.

Not at all, was offered some money vouchers, I asked for miles instead and she just said max she could authorise was 15k miles, I just said that was fine, hit my account a few days after the flight.

Her gorgeousness and I eventually each got 10,000 miles from VS for my broken seat etc on our Grenada trip in March. I had had to hold the seat upright for several hours including the landing. Also got some cash compensation from VH.[y]

Faulty tv MRU-LHR A340-300 flight and I was offered 25 off anything on the duty free trolly.
Also happened to me on a LHR-LAX A340-600 flight.
Must be costing the airline a fortune!

September 2008 I was offered 2 free upgrades from Y to PE next time we flew with VS (they couldn't be prebooked and where subject to availibilty on the day[n]) when my UC seat broke and the metal frame could be felt protruding through the seat. (no other seats available on the plane.) We also had some problems in PE on the way back.

I said no and went to customer relations direct and then we were offered 40000 miles for me and 20000 miles for Mrs Chumba, which we happily took. [^]

Same as Neil, 15k miles each not due to a tv fault but LHR check in taking over an hour hence no CH.

VS spend a lot, I mean A LOT on compensation every month, makes you wonder why they don't just fix the thing huh.

Seriously. WHEN did the world turn into compo-kingdom? It's ridiculous. My partner 'didn't care to watch the DVD's'. So... if the IFE HAD worked, but they'd seen everything on offer - would that have required immediate compensation too?

I'm sorry, but the compensation mentality has gone too far. Get over it. I know this will sound unreasonable / harsh / mean / short, but come ON people - this is ridiculous. This was not a case of consistent failings, of routine imperfections, of fraudulent advertising or of unfair claims. The 'compo-culture' (in my view) is one stop short of the 'knock-off-nigel' mentality in terms of a 'get what you can' view on life which is becoming the cancer of society at large. QUIT IT.

For Heaven's sake! He'd seen all the films available in DVD which had been offered when his TV didn't work. He then had to swap with you because the arm-rest didn't go down. Presumably he was able to watch the IFE then? And you expect compensation? I wouldn't even think of seeking compensation for something like that.

preiffer- Both my husband and myself paid for a seat which many times before was working properly not with the shelf sticking up into the seat whilst trying to sleep. THAT is the standard I expect. NOT to have to move into my husbands seat because he cannot comfortably lay down.

Each to their own then sorry I bothered asking will keep my questions, views and opinons to myself next time. How wonderful for you both to have so many miles that a few extra wouldn't go amiss. Congratulations to you both for being such pillars of the community.

Yes we REALLY were put out. Hubby was annoyed, I had to change seat. No did not *RUIN* our journey but funnily enough I don't enjoy being annoyed or inconvienced. Why don't you go ahead and educate me on what I should be worried about seeing as you seem to be able to judge what is and what is not worthy of my annoyance

Why should I? Virgin are quick enough to take my money and keep it. Why on earth should I not react the same way. I do onto others as they do to me and in my experience Virgin have squeezed every penny they can out of me at every opportunity.

My view, as a person who has recently turned 50, is that there are two issues here.

The first issue of 'Something went wrong, am I entitled to anything?' is fine.

The second issue of 'I am going to get compo, so how much can I screw them for?' is what grates.

Just a personal opinion, feel free to disagree, that is the point of a discussion board.

People are asked for their opinion, and they express it. If the replies are not in line with your own views, then. Sorry, but that is what debate is all about.

Personally I think the compensation culture is way out of hand, but that isn't the OP's fault, it is one of the many aspects of modern life that is leading us down a slippery path. But then, that is more a debate for the off topic forum. [;)]

Let the debate continue, but please keep it civil.

I agree with others on the whole compensation culture issue, and it has nothing to do with age (I am 27, and know Paul is under 30 also!). Too many people want something for nothing nowadays, and it needs to be sorted. It is even more annoying also, because when people do genuinely deserve compensation they are treated as a free loader, or one of the 'something for nothing' camp, but at the end of the day if something isn't correct then you should be compensated accordingly.

I would have personally waited until you received the miles from VS before asking if you should 'push for more', as that statement did come across slightly as you trying to get more than you deserve, which was probably not your intention at all. In reality, 5k miles is a good amount, when you consider you can get a round trip reward flight in Y for only 25k miles.
