This is likely to be a Y trip so it's quite important as the BD allowance is much better for me than the VS allowance when flying Y.

I am almost certain that there is no chance your BD allowance limits will be relevant for your VS flight. Who are you booking through?

I'm not sure who I will book it through yet. It's just this statement:

If a passenger has purchased one ticket for their entire journey, that includes flights with other airlines, each operating airlines allowance will apply.

Could mean:

a) You get the carriers allowance on their own flight
b) The most generous allowance applies across all flights on the same ticket

I am 99.9% certain, that the answer is a).

Well, just to throw another iron into the fire this is a direct quote from our add-on contracts to add other airlines flights to a Virgin ticket:

'The baggage allowance and Ticketing Time Limit of the most restrictive airline shall apply to the entire routing.'
This means that if you have a US domestic then technically you can have a zero baggage allowance

The problem is that the airlines used to adhere to the IATA rule that the most generous limit applied to the routing but then small airlines in little planes got scr3wed by this so they refused to adhere and all hell broke loose!
