I understand that. But why did they fly to athens and not, for instance Madrid or Rome?

I flew to ATH on VS but it was a bizarre service on what seemed to be someone elses aircraft just branded Virgin. In something called 'hellenic' class you got a Video 8 player and a list of films and it was quite comfortable I do remember. It wasnt like Virgin Atlantic though. More of a prototypical Virgin co-branded effort. You got points though - or I wouldnt have flown it.

From the VS website

Due to operational reasons, Virgin Atlantic has had to cancel the following services:

Between London Gatwick and Orlando:

VS049/050 LGW-MCO-LGW - 05 May 2006 to 28 October 2006
Passengers will be rebooked onto the VS015/016 London Gatwick to Orlando services on the same day

From my reading of it, this flight has only been temporarily cancelled and not discontinued. It is probably to free up aircraft for new routes.

Re the Athens route - back in the early 90's VS took over an airline (can't remember the name) which operated the LGW>ATH route. The A/C where re-branded in VS colours on their exterior only, the cabins were left in their 2 class config (economy and business class)

I think things are pretty tight now at LGW regarding spare A/C. What with the LAS service now daily from LGW, the new LGW>MBJ service twice a week, 2 MAN>MCO flights 3 days a week along with a 3rd VS service from MAN to UVF on Thursdays in Nov. With 3 B744's serving MAN on a Thursday during Nov, that only leaves 5 B744's for all the other LGW serivces.

There's even a couple of LGW flights using LHR A343's at the moment.

I believe that they entered a partnership with South-East European Airways (SEEA) to operate this route. Aircraft previously used on the route included a Boeing 737-400 and an Airbus A320

Hope this helps!
