There is a solitary, 4 letter c word I use to describe this individual.

If I ever get on a plane, and he is on it, I'll turn straight back and ask to go on another flight.

MW checked into my hotel one year. All his private conversations were conducted at full volume and the lack of respect shown towards the staff was the talk of all the other guests.

I would need written confirmation from the manager that he wasn't booked in again before I would return!

Having never met the guy I cannot comment from direct experience however most people who have, including several restaurateurs that I know, seem to concur with the majority of sentiment expressed in this topic.

That having been said I must confess to enjoying his writings, I find them interesting and entertaining albeit they do tend to be frequently acerbic and inflammatory.

Like many 'actors' the whole MW think is a front - he is quite likeable but I do enjoy reading his public persona!

I think he is a funny old duffer and enjoy his clearly tongue in cheek
throwaway reviews. Suprises me sometimes how some people get some sadistic pleasure going out of there own way to be offended so tey can be enraged for a bit, thats why the likes of Winner does it he knows people are just lapping it all up.

If he only wrote tongue in cheek articles I wouldn't have a problem, but I witnessed his attitude of hotel staff first hand and I found it very offensive to see good people humiliated in public just to serve his ego and be noticed.

Winner wrote a review of the Jalousie Hilton in C.2000 after his Xmas stay(Sandy Lane was being rebuilt at the time). He gave it a glowing thumbs up, we were there about 2 months later and it was dire.We got to know the general manager of Jalousie quite well during the stay.He told us how Winner had fallen out with the GM of The Royal St Lucian apparently they had history over Winners comments about Clivedon the Royal GMs former post.Winner only stayed at Jalousie for a couple of nights after he left the Royal in a strop. He complained about everything was a rude t*** to everyone, staff and other customers. The Jalousie GM said he wrote the good review just to put the back up of the Royal St Lucians general manager.
From this I deduced Winner is a crap/manipulative reviewer and a rude t***[:D]

Despite the fact that I find him to be a serial irritant, the first section I turn to in the Sunday Times is always Winners Dinners. It is extremely rare that I disagree with his restaurant reviews, although the points he often raises (like iced water and deliberately dropping or waving his napkin) are not my 'tests'.

On this occasion however, I would certainly contest his assertion of the quality of VS food and beverage in UC which is on the same par as going out to dine at a provincial Holiday Inn where mediocrity pervades. The food in F on BA that he compares it to, while hardly Michelin, has at least had some thought put into it, and the wine is a huge step change for the better. I am sure the all too frequent VS fawning will have been in full flood over Mr Winner while the poor remaining punters received a rather less-than-gushing experience.
