I found the Platinum Amex not worth it long term, though 40k miles makes it valuable for that first year. So take those miles, then cancel after 11 months is my advice. Also look out for promotions which VS run, giving you an extra 25% miles when you transfer Amex miles to them. makes it worth 50k miles, duh. So for 300 pounds you get roughly one leg of a long haul upper. a good deal.

Being a brit who emigrated to the US, I find that mileage cards are HUGE here, compared to the UK, plus are much better value. The principle is that your good credit rating (the ability to be approved for credit cards, etc) is an ASSET of yours, and that you should use this asset to regularly 'churn' your cards to make the most of the fresh card offers. In other words take the 30k/40k/50k miles, (meeting the minimum spend if required) and move on to the next one. There's an art in not doing it too much - your credit rating can suffer if you do, but one or two cards a year is fine.

I got Starwood (SPG) this month for 30k miles/ no annual fee/ $1000 spend. and 6 months back got the Chase BA one, which was an incredible 100k miles, plus a free voucher that doubles that after you spend 30k (which I managed to hit). amazing offer. Girlfriend applied too, and you can link accounts so we have over 250k miles for zero cost, and with my 30k spend voucher that is effectively doubled to 500k, which is a very nice pair of first class flights to virtually anywhere. unbelievable. VS gives you a voucher for a measly companion Economy seat for half usual miles, if you are a serious spender on their credit card. Big deal! I try to hit the BA one every year, and only after that am I back to VS.

VS amex - black one here in US - remains a good staple as it earns me Tier Points, to maintain my GC status, plus I try to buy stuff through their 'shopping partners' link, which e.g. on eBay, means you get extra miles again. Buy something big, like a $5000 camera, especially when eBay has a double miles offer on, and you can gets 10k from eBay and 7.5k from VS amex (1.5miles/1$), so thats a sweet haul of 17.5k miles (what you would have got from an UC transatlantic flight!) for simply buying an item with their card! Other shopping partners have double triple or 5x miles. Even Apple gives you miles, so that iPad or Phone you bought could be another few thousand miles in the bank if you buy via click-through on VS Amex.

I could go on, but it seems the UK have a way to go to latch onto the mileage card game, compared to the US. I'm just a beginner, there are countless websites with people who spend their entire life maximising this system!

Has anyone managed to upgrade their Gold account and got the 40,000 and quidco offer?

I'm into my 3 month of my Gold card and are awaiting the 20,000 miles bonus. However, after looking at the benefits of the Planinum card I am really tempted. Just wondered if anyone has spoken to Amex or just cancelled and re-applied? and if so what was their responce?

Regards,

-Steve

I can't comment on the Gold to Platimum change but I have to say Nick (op) should be on commission with Amex! My card due this week and all because of this posting :)

Steve

I had to chase them - twice. Turns out that they set my card up incorrectly and had to reissue it but they did so in such a way that caused me a lot of problems including thinking my account had been hacked into. They really were hopless in communicating and answering my questions.

They had to do all sorts of manual points additions. I still think they have diddled me on some of the double miles awards as well and will be chasing this up with them.

I'd send them a message via the secure message system.

I was a little late to the party on the gold card, but have had it a while now and completed the spend in the second month. I am assured that my 20K bonus points will go in on 5th Aug - so I will wait and see.

I used the secure message system on their website to query the bonus points and the plat upgrade - it seems a great system - I got a reply within 24 hours and then some follow up stuff.

I was told that if I applied for the plat card and made the required spend, I would get a further 40K bonus points, so I applied on line. I didn't get an immediate 'yes' but a PIN arrived on Saturday, so I am hopeful that the plat card will arrive in the next day or so.

@MrDoob - unfortunately, no commission, but my wife has also taken out a separate gold card, so we should be at 80K bonus points and counting. :D :D

@Stevieboy I didn't cancel my gold card before applying for the plat card, but I don't think I will be using it much when / if the plat card arrives. ):

There are some significant exclusions - Hilton for example - which annoy. They did, however, credit me with a bunch of points to ease my pain in this respect when I pointed out that nowhere does it say one of the major hotel chains doesn't qualify for the double points.

Its just the illogicallity of it.

If e.g. I top up my oyster card at an underground station I don't get the double miles but if I do at an overground station I do.!

I'm with you all the way on that - got a vague allbeit speedy reply from Amex ref the addtl 20k bonus miles, but not yet the miles.

Quidco even worse - no reply for over 7 days and the claim goes back to April. Hugely unimpressed so far!

Hi

I've applied (and been given) the Gold card. I've done the spend (in the first month) and am waiting for the bonus miles from AMEX. But at least I can see I'm getting double miles on my spend

The one I'm under-impressed with is Quidco, who (following V-Flyers) I applied through. After a month I can see my Quidco is still 'validated' (whatever that means) and has been for a month

How do you contact Quidco? - The 'contact' section doesn't contain any info on contacting them

The FAQ says I may have to wait another FOUR MONTHS...

Has anyone actually seen the colour of Quidco's money for this offer?

Peter

After clickingthe 'help' tab near the 'sign in'option , 4th up from the bottom is 'contacting us' click on that and then 'contacting quidoco' comes up, click on the blue 'click here' link then fill in the on-line form.

'Validated' means just that. AMEX had told Quidco that your claim is valid and its now a case of just waiting as Quidco wont pay you until AMEX have paid them.

But I don't think contacting them about an already validated claim wont actually help get yo the £ any quicker.

TBH I'm not ipressed with quidco generally. Of the 6 things I have bought via them NONE of them have tracked automatically and have all needed manual claims. With cashbackkings I had 2 issues with about 30 transactions.

Hi All

I've had my reply from Quidco, now Tonty has explained their site to me

It says "Your American Express Platinum Card purchase is currently going through the normal validation and payment period, which can take around 6 months in total from the date of purchase to the cashback being received by Quidco."

So I guess it could be an Xmas present !

Has anyone received their card yet? I was disappointed to receive mine without any welcome pack or idea how to get the priority pass cards. I called Amex and they said they will resend the welcome pack but nothing still received. They told me to go to the website to apply for the gold status hotel cards, car rental and priority plus. Its all a bit crap really considering the £300 fee.

Finally received my 20k MR points (plus another 5k MR as a gesture of goodwill for having to wait so long :)

Also received my Platinum Card but no welcome pack either?

I got my 20K Gold bonus okay, after a bit of chasing up.

I had exactly the same problem of a lack of Welcome Pack with the plat card, and the link given on the letter to access the online welcome pack kept timing out.

I posted this thread, over on the ever helpful FT Amex board, and was given a work around to access, Priority Pass application form etc.

This is the link that works : http://www.americanexpress.co.uk/platinum

I agree, for the money paid for the card, the welcome given is pretty poor.

When I got my Plat card in 2007 I got a lovely little welcome pack, full of all the partner application forms etc, and also lots of info and the like about the card, and also a couple of nice Plat card luggage tags. I agree, that for £300 you should get some kind of pack.

The priority pass application is very quick and easy, I just faxed mine over, gave them a call and she had it in her hand within a minute or so, and cards received within a few days. The other cards (Hilton etc) took an absolute age, and required a lot of chasing up.

I got immediate approval for the gold card and it arrived pretty quickly, but I had to wait a week or two for the Plat card to arrive. I was never contacted to tell me that the card had been approved - as promised on the website - it just arrived. PIN first, then the card a few days later.

Don't worry about rushing the £1500 spend - you have three months.

From the T&C of the offer - 1.For the Platinum Card, the 40,000 Membership Rewards bonus points will be awarded onto your account once you have been approved and you have spent and charged £1,500 within the first 3 months of Cardmembership.

Link to Amex website.
