She's probably flying from LHR as that is where Virgin have their route authority. I know when another UK airline had refits done by ANZ they flew to LHR and then LHR-LAX rather than direct to lax from LTN(their maintainence base)

I very much doubt that the runway is long enough at LTN to enable an aircraft to take off to LAX baring in mind fuel weight etc
