There didn't seem to be any, and my account now says Silver.

There isn't a free Gold option. The offer being discussed, which expired yesterday, had a fast track to Gold as detailed on the page.

I know, my comment was flippant and not particularly amused Red gets Silver so easily.

I think it proves how little value VS put on silver which, after all, offers very little of real benefit apart from the extra miles.

The IoD offer that expired yesterday is by no means unique - many employers offer the same as a staff perk, mine included.

Virgin aren't unique in offer status for no or very little loyalty. Many airlines, hotels, car hire firms all offer elevated status by having their credit card or through corporate deals with large organizations etc.

Yes, all offers though for those that travel frequently not just the once a year holiday flight. No offence to anyone but its not a fair offer just been given IMHO

How is it not fair?

Click on the link and you'll automatically be upgraded to silver, something that normally takes 15 TP to achieve.

Once you're silver you'll earn 50% extra miles per flight and, if travelling in economy, be allowed to use PE check-in. That benefits once-a-year travellers just as much as it does frequent flyers.

But yes, at the end of the day, Flying Club is a loyalty programme that rewards you more the more you fly with VS. Nothing wrong with that, surely?

I would expect to see an overhaul of the tier levels of VS FF before long.
Whilst the VS FF is one of the most generous VS fizzles out at Gold.
Most US FF have 4 or 5 tiers and so each level offers tangible extra benefits.
By just having 3 formal levels VS cannot give meaningful benefits to Silver members as there are just so many.
Delta may well influence this if they want to allign the FF programs more as they (DL) have 5 levels. Also the fact that the new VS boss is ex-AA (who invented the FF concept) a major review must be on the cards.

I'm Silver already Gumshoe.. Used to be Gold but less flights to the US mean its even a. effort to stay silver. What is not fair is the offer giving those not IOD members upgrade to Silver despite the offer supposed to be for IOD only! Anyway, I will get off my soap box now.

Most of those who have taken up this offer probably only fly VS once every year/2 years so unlikely to earn the 15 TP to renew - but they will feel important for a year and this may gain VS some loyalty in future.

All this means for those taking the offer up is some extra miles (& the subsequent realisation that reward seats are tough to get on the MCO route in the school holidays), plus increasing the queues at PE check in for a year.

The greatest benefit is to those who are loyal to VS and perhaps fly a couple of times a year but never earn enough TP to qualify - this will be a nice reward with some extra miles.

Oh ok I get you now ... I guess the only way round that would be to password protect the link, but with so many employers offering the same deal to hundreds of thousands of staff it would probably be pointless as people would just share the password online.

I guess VS don't care how many people are silver - in fact the more the merrier as it doesn't really cost them anything and if it encourages more people to fly more in an attempt to attain gold (which, of course, is the only level that offers anything vaguely worthwhile), so much the better for their finances.

David.

I took advantage of the offer and had Silver for a year. Should at least maintain Silver this year (and get bonus miles to make up for the H-class fiasco.)

Or they might realise it's an error.

The thing is, this isn't really being touted everywhere on the Internet. Only travel nerds (excuse the turn of phrase it isn't meant as an insult) like us have seen it and not everyone will have done it.

I can appreciate why you feel a bit miffed but really does it matter whether someone is a member of the IOD or not?

In my opinion yes it does! I go to great pains these days to maintain Silver although it doesn't offer the advantages of Gold but its better than Red and if god forbid I don't when flying for business manage to get round the new Econ mandate as least I get PE checkin

Having turned left once a few years ago and had the opportunity to sample BA first I've not flown economy long haul since and I plan to stay that way anyway possible!! Four flights this year in UC and one more already booked.

And the offer was supposed to be Open to IOD only....

it IS being touted on lots of sites/forums/facebook/twitter etc

VS will have to send out thousands of Silver FF Packs, which I guess all have a cost & postage attached, plus the thousands of extra miles that will be given on the now silver status flights.

I haven't seen it anywhere other than travel sites, hence my comment.

I think it's actually a great pr stunt. Build a bit of a buzz surrounding the brand, and I bet not nearly as many people as we might think have signed up for it.

What does it matter Miss G? I doubt VS IT will cope with rescinding the offer to those who have taken advantage or maybe they will...
