Anyone who thinks customs aren't watching just because there's no-one behind the desk in the green channel is, I'm afraid, somewhat naive.
Of course they've got limited resources and have to choose their battles which means it doesn't make sense to swoop on everyone who's bringing in a few extra fags or a new computer.
But you may also pick a day when they've been told to crack down or they're just plain bored. The best way to stop people doing something is to make an example of someone - word spreads very quickly.
