really?! thats odd ive just been on virgin atlantic and did a dummy run. I only did it for 1 person as it wont let me as i dont have enough miles to cover 2 people. it says i can book a seat for the 17:40pm flight 3rd jan 2014. and this was spend miles.

yes, a dummy booking lets you book 1 reward PE seat on 3rd, but if you change the number of passengers to 2, it says no

closest dates are 1st or 6th

Oh that's not too good! Is there any days which shows 2 available seats? If i do a dummy booking with money will that be what's available when I spend miles? :(

Yes sorry my mistake it would offer me 1 seat but no more than one, It was showing the 3rd and 12th as the only days in the whole of January that werent available for 2 people, so you can get 2 seats every other day in January!

As a side note You can check for more seats even if you don't have enough miles to actually book the seats, but you must check via spend miles to find reward availability.

I just checked myself and I can fly out on 1st til 7th jan, would this be reasonable? I did only want to go for around 4nights just before I go back I work and the 4 nights and my spending money would have worked out nicely

I'd say 4-5 nights is a pretty reasonable amount of time in NYC, whatever suits you best. I can see outbound PE availability for 2 everyday in January except the 3rd and 12th and return availability everyday after the 7th so you have plenty of options.

Edit as I typed wrong date

Is the 4th -8th available for travel as wen I went on va it wouldn't allow me to select the days between 1st-7th

nope 4th not available, it reverts back to the calendar, closest dates are outbound 1st, 6th, and return only date NOT available is 10th

Yes it is, I can get availability for this, flying into Newark and out of JFK, this is calendar of dates available into/out of one of the NYC airports

10th is also available on the VS018 out of Newark on the Early Flight

Edit I see you posted this above y)

What is Newark airport like? Both airports are around the same distance apart. Are the dates more available into Newark. And I would rely on taxis around NYC so how much would it cost to get to Times Square area?

Newark is my personal preference but there's really not much in it IMO, taxi costs very similar from either airport, you can also get the train from Newark airport straight to penn station which is only a 10 minute walk from Times Square, or a 1 minute subway trip.

Can't tell you about taxi costs once in Manhattan I'm afraid as I either walk or use the subway myself, as for taxi from airport I paid $61 dollars either way for private Limo/town car transfer with Dial 7 when I was in NYC this January

The only sad thing is landing at 11:10 pm where as at JFK it was landing at 8 so I think I would have to just check that out more.

And I think I would prefer some kind of taxi or something like dial7 so I get straight there.

Other dates might offer better times? 6th to the 11th for example offers VS009 to JFK and multiple Choices on return

Or 2nd to the 7th though the return flight is early morning"

I would go for dial 7 if it's only $61 as yellow cab will only be $3 less and dial 7 will be far comfier

If you want to have a few hrs in the CH first and aren't that bothered if you get there late on the first evening I would recommend either the 1 in to Newark or the 9 or even the 25 into JFK as the queues shouldn't be to bad but I would swerve the 45 if I were you

I was looking to go at the start of January die to going back to work a few days after I get back. And I was looking at Newark times as try have more date choices but when you do a dummy booking it gives you the late outbound flight and inbound is leaving at 7:30am on the last day so i wouldn't really be there to enjoy the days as I lose the last day leaving so early :(

Ok how about Vs001 on the 2nd leaves LHR 16:00 arrives into Newark at 19.05

And return on the 7th from JFK choice of 3 flights 18:00 19:25 or 22:35?

That can be done

Hi,

Sorry,

I'm not wanting to hijack the thread, but I'm looking to go to NYC in August for John's 50th. I haven't been for years and John has never been.
I'm looking for a hotel that wont break the bank and has easy access to most things. This is one below that I've looked at;

Avalon Hotel
16 East 32nd Street, New York City, NY 10016 Manhattan, anyone know anything about the area?

Any advice would be much appreciated, for just about EVERYTHING.

Many thanks,

Karen

@Sunsational, my husband and I stayed in Manhattan bu not at exactly this hotel. Ours was called Mela and was located maybe 5 minutes away from the Fifth Avenue. I'd suggest you to take a look at different cheap hotels that have reduced rates (we used this one - http://new-york.hotelscheap.org/ for our reservation ) and try to save your money for other activities. As I love to say, don't buy things, buy experiences. Have a nice stay in NYC! :)

I agree with this, but I also feel that staying at a great hotel in a great location with an amazing view is also part of the experience. Thats why I want to stay at the shangri-la Tokyo oneday. The view from the Deluxe premier bay view room must be fantastic. The view we had from our southeast facing corner double last time in tokyo was simply amazing both at night and especially at sunrise.

but yes december in NYC will be a great experience for sure. Perhaps a hotel near midtown? or Times Square? I stayed at the Best Western years ago and will not the greatest hotel (its a 3* i think) the location was great.

That it is, best views are from the Horizon Club lounge though ;)

Hope ya get there one day G. Thinking about it, there are a couple of restaurants I am sure will be good for a meal and subsequently enjoy the high rise views from the table.. just a thought 8D

Booked with BA - sorry VA, they were £600 cheaper each including the hotel. Staybridge Suites is the hotel of choice.
Now have to work out how to get there from JFK and also prioritise what see and where to go over the five days.

Thanks to those that posted.
