I was just over on A'Net when I came across THIS TR, I am left wondering, why can't VS do this, it's so sad, seeing the difference between the two airlines.
You need to scroll down a bit to get to the long haul segment.
And l'occitane goodies too!
Like so many of you here, I'm really sad to see this penny-pinching, at the same time as hiking flight prices. I'm no longer forever seeking airmiles-collecting opportunities with such fervour. In fact, have just bought some reward seats and left ourselves with very few miles.
Have very seriously been looking at BA as an alternative a few times now - and have to say that the only real issue holding me back is the seemingly ever-present threat of strikes. I would have already jumped ship by now otherwise.
What a shame.... polos, pens and creams - they don't mean a lot in themselves, it's more what they represent, isn't it???

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts...
I wonder just what is happening in Virgin Land. Given the recent troubles of JAL, and the recent spate of airlines going under, things are maybe tougher than we realise. And Virgin can cut their frills first as they have (or had) more than their rivals?

Its a shame to loose the goodies and it gets to the point sometimes when its classier to offer nothing rather than a lame excuse for something, a bit like leaving a penny as a tip, its more of an insult than a kindness.
Not being a highflyer or a aristocrat myself travelling in Upper is still regarded as a special treat to me and something to look forward to and given the opportunity I will make my trips more special given the chance. If VA were to offer a high quality amenity pack for pre purchase in a case/bag worth keeping as a memento of my trip I would gladly buy one.
My view is ditch the whole pack or give a worthwhile one.

I have to admit that I do use the shoe bag. Being a bit of a shoeaholic, wrap each pair in a bag. However the bag is only just big enough for Mr A's shoes which are BIG.
There was no sign of any basket on our return flight. I find it useful having a few odds and ends to hand - in fact the whole lot came in very useful last April on our diversion to Halifax. Since then I always travel with every possible item in minature and have become a Gift with Purchase whore just to get travel size items!

Scrooge, where did you get the info on the 700,000 pounds saving for the removal of the basket? Just curious. If that is the case, then you are 100% right, the VS buyer in charge of sourcing their polo mints should be sacked. We're talking about flying on a ticket that costs thousands of pounds, and they take away a 5 pence pack of polos?!?!
I don't know if other flyers have noticed, but a lot of people don't seem to take anything out of the basket, and if they do, maybe one item. I wonder if this is something to do with being British. I could be the odd one out here, but when the half full basket comes round, I look at it, and think to myself (reminiscent of the Eddie Izzard sketch when he talks about being on a small commuter plane and the captain hands backwards a small wicker basket of biscuits, keeping the chocolate digestives for himself) 'hmmmm, goodies, I want them allll, I want all the Polos, and all the pens to myself'. But then I come to my senses and think no, I shan't be greedy, I shall pick one item incase I am the first and they run out. For some inane reason I feel guilty about taking more than one thing?! If they just had the basket out on the bar or something, I would surely take 2 packs of polos AND a pen!
I digress. The point is, it was bad enough when we went from the Ozwald Boateng amenity packs to the shoe bag with not much in it and the tacky wicker basket of guilt. Then the razors disappeared from the basket. Now the basket has vanished, and UC customers get less than Y customers. I feel I must be missing something here...has VS taken a couple of seats out of UC and installed a Spa to make up for the lack of moisturizer? Will the cabin crew now fill out our landing forms for us, seeing as though there are no pens? Perhaps there is now a dental hygienist on board to whiten our teeth and freshen our breath before landing? I'm thinking not. But then I seem to be doing more thinking than VS management have been doing recently.
The UK allegedly came out of the recession last month, the US has been out for a few months now. Economies are starting to grow again, albeit rather slowly. Virgin need to start innovating again, and soon, in order to get a head start and capture its share of the growth. Keep cutting back, and even if it's something small like a pack of polos, the perception is there that VS are struggling and that's not going to help the brand image. Which impacts loyalty.
Btw I've just noticed the irony in this topic title - 'Removal of...Essentials'

Sorry, I can't tell you where I got that info, but I am sure someone here will back me up on that figure.
I don't think it was a matter of not being greedy, I have to agree with Decker and say it was mostly because the products on offer were crap.
I still have to sit here and wonder why VS can't get some manufacture to give them samples to give out as an amenity pack, cruise lines do it everyday, why can't VS. Just to note, the last cruise we were on they were giving out ELEMIS products.
I have to agree that it is simply amazing that the people sitting in Y and W get a better pack than those in UC, simply put, it is stupid beyond belief that it has gotten to this point.

I guess it would be verbal info. [;)]
I wonder if the reasoning is partially that they would rather not compete if they can't compete....
At one time VS aspired, and largely succeeded, to be the best.
Now they clearly are not - and perhaps have just given up.

This thread has got me all of a to-do and hoo-hah!
I posted the letter I wrote to Virgin on the forums about a month ago regarding my malfunctioning Premium Economy pen. It was a bit of fun, but nonetheless I'm gutted that on my first ever UC flight in 2 weeks time, I might not get a nice UC pen.
I love the little extras in all the cabins. Back in the day you got lip balm in economy! Perfect for those winter trips to NYC.
PS: If any V-flyers are going to be in the clubhouse a week today (23rd) do let me know. Would be good to say hi!

Whether the pens were nice or even useful is a matter of opinion, as they were stubby little things rather lacking in character. Those in the library at the CH were, in my opinion. far more appealing, being long and skinny with a rather fetching tailfin.
The shoebag has had far more use than the pen.

The pens weren't allways short and stubby. Initially they were long (like the CH ones, but minus the fin). Suddenly they were chopped [:0]. A bit like the amenity kit really.

And any mention of the extras basket is now gone from the Upper Class (declining) experience:
We all have our own little comforts that help us get the best possible flight's sleep, but individually our needs are all different. That's why weve designed the Snooze Pack, to give you a day or night time snooze experience that is uniquely customised just for you.
The pack includes passenger essential: toothbrush and toothpaste, eyeshades, socks and earplugs all delivered in a handy shoe bag. Cabin Crew will offer a sleep suit to those who wish to bed down during the flight.
I am sure that. some suppliers would be more than willing to give small sized products FOC to have them showcased on board. Poor show if you ask me

Well, I holding onto my salt and pepper planes and my long, skinny tailfin shaped pen and the short stubby ones. You never know, one day they may become quite valuable (on Ebay!).
