So how come the only place this is mentioned is a small west of Ireland news website? No mention on the Beeb or anywhere else as far as I can see

Eyja... was bad becuase it was errupting under a glacier and that generated more steam and changed the lava output into ash / dust rather than the more usual volcanic lava flows.
Apparently the difference is that Eyja... was under a little glacier, whereas Katla is under a glacier 3 miles thick!
