Ok, this lot has made for some fun reading. My strategy..... If an early morning flight, pack what I need the day before, if a late one.. Pack the morning of departure. Keeping it simple and not getting bogged down with the constant double checking of contents - honestly though was like that once upon a time, I guess I have soured to it... A shame methinks. :(

Ahh Packing, Me i start at zero 7 days an sort out mine/hubbys tops shorts undies etc on the spare bed add sandles/flippyflops and a couple of slip on dresses/long shorts, and then add/drop through the next 7 days. My son then gets his ready 24 hrs before we go, and its done in 5 mins, His packing is undies/socks for the duration 2 tops/shorts sandles/flippyflops swimmers, toiltries. case is then shut and locked. :0 :0 :0 When we get to orlando after a quiet first night, we go son shopping, to the Harley shop this could be in Daytona or any other shop he likes, spend a couple of hours getting new clothes tops long leg shorts and any other leather goods etc. This is a mammoth task and he always fills his other large holdall thats goes with us.Then wears them all while we are there. ): We then start our holiday. y)

I'll probably go online later and look up dining options, even though I know a handful of restaurants I could go to.!

Check out yelp as a source for reviews of the Northern Quarter. I know a good reviewer... :D

Back OT, has no- one yet mentioned setting timers on lights and a radio?

Little bit last minute.com Dom :-0
Would have thought you would have set some clothes aside before heading to SFO then upon return just gotta do some laundry and add to the existing pile lol

Shocking I know Bretty v(

It's actually Auckland NZ just flying via SYD (that's AU sorted for next year again)
Both Business and Pleasure I guess as it's the first time I've seen some of the In laws since 2006, just a shame to leave this wonderful weather we have here for late winter / early spring.

I'm sure it will be fun :D

I thought I'd revisit this thread again as I'm preparing for my trip LHR-NRT in 3 weeks, and so my packing extravaganza begins!

Here's where I'm at so far:
    Seats selected at T-60.
CDC booked for LHR and DTCI.
Currency obtained and in the safe with passport, organised by denomination and all facing same way!
Folder organised with itinerary and documents, in chronological order with tabs, including printouts of major rail stations we're using in Japan (the stations are HUGE) and printout of Tokyo subway map (all of which I know I can get on arrival but hey, this is my thing!). :w
Our tour organiser has sent us a travel pack with a nice booklet with our itinerary and details of hotels, suggested train schedules for getting to our destinations, our JR Pass vouchers and vouchers for hotel reservations. I've added to this with details of connecting trains to aid planning (and will download Hyperdia app 'just in case').
The vouchers have been copied so I have spares and a set emailed to my iPad.
Passport and travel insurance photocopied and emailed to iPad.
Documentation is still a work in progress, and over the last few days has been reorganised several times :w (I can't help it).

Packing:
Travel outfit is now being sorted with my 'travel trousers' on the bed in spare room awaiting a shirt and sweater to go with it.
The packing pile has been started with 2 pair shorts and 2 belts and over the next couple of weeks I'll start adding to the pile before packing, using packing cubes which I've been using for a few months now for short trips (they've revolutionised my packing).

Dopp kit is sorted and will have first aid kit and medication etc added later.
Cameras have been checked and batteries charged with spares etc - so chargers / cables that I will need can now be packed.

I'll try and stick to just 2 pairs of shoes, but that is difficult for me, lol. Last year we bought some decent Regatta raincoats for this trip as they're lightweight and can easily be folded / rolled. However, we've recently bought some new summery jackets, water repellent but more stylish, so now can't decide which to take - practical or stylish? Decisions, decisions... :? :?

I love being this organised - the excitement of my pending holiday is building only 22 days until the journey begins... I can't wait!

Happy travels folks :D :D

When we travel, my wife throws things into a bag a couple of hours before we set off for the airport. Seems to think that anything else borders on OCD. Chacun a son gout (apparently)...

We travel tomorrow - cases have essentially been packed since the weekend - but not closed, so as to minimise the inevitable creasing :) paperwork/docs checked - but of course, OF COURSE at least 2 more final checks to be made there ... just hand luggage to go. I say 'just' - but when you consider it's largely camera/phone,ipad/razor (for himself!) plus assorted chargers, that's no mean feat in itself...

I remember the days when hand luggage was as simple as book/crossword material lol.

Have to admit, I feel totally disorganised. It's been manic at work (just moved moved premises and role), and also had the car in the garage for 3 days.....

I need a holiday :)

Some people might say we're a bit nuts or OCD etc, but I just think it's normal behaviour lol ;)

Hiljil - have a good flight back when the day comes.

Also, is it weird that I've kept stuff from my last few holidays? The folders I prepare eventually get reused but the documents are transferred to an envelope and kept, and I've also got credit card receipts for just about everything we bought / paid for during each trip. I don't get them out and go through them you understand, I just have them... :w

If only I was that organised!
I pack the morning of or the night before travel depending on when we leave the house.
I've forgotten my driving licence twice when we've gone to Portugal, luckily the hire company let me drive without it the first time and remembered me the second!
I've forgotten my boarding pass for Ryan air...that was expensive.
Unfortunately I never learn.

I like the sound of packing cubes tho y)

Aah, the force is not strong in this one. Ultreen, you must learn from these happenings and feel the force and it will serve you well. ;)

You don't necessarily have to be OCD or weird, but the organisation is part of the fun and pleasure of the build up to a trip for some of us, and ensures we never (or rarely) slip up. Take it from one who left the house many years ago for a foreign business trip without my passport, and had to get a cab from local train station home and back and got my connecting train just in time. Let me tell you, my Bryan who was travelling with, was not happy, I'd left his too! Never again. And these days I've stopped flying for business and it's now all leisure so a night at the airport in a lovely hotel, nice meal blah, blah is a welcome start to my trip hehe, and ensures I'm not gonna be late. y)

Feel the force young Jedi, feel the force... ;)

I'm the same way. I've got packing cubes and compression bags that I use for travel. As an OCD person, it gives me comfort knowing that everything fits nicely in the bag. Packing the suitcase is like Luggage Tetris.

I'm already packed for my trip and it's 14 days away. :D

Ok- strange one here but I have never flown long haul! Only within Europe with EJ- and only for a short break. In sept me and the OH will be going on honeymoon for my first ever flight on VS, so maybe might be a bit crazy but I have already started lists and getting ready to buy things. I'm short of taking over the spare room but from august the office is mine!
I have seen the " bundling" method video and that seems to work- anyone got any other favorites? Complete novice willing to learn!
