Hi,

Currently have a N class booking to Cuba on the 5th of October. Flying Club Gold Memeber. I know the rules say that it can't be upgraded, but has anybody had any luck ever upgrading a N class fare?.

Thanks

ISTBC but rules are rules are N fares cannot be upgraded. Maybe one of the sites fare experts will confirm for you.

Only by paying up the difference to an upgradeable class and then going from there.

It may also be the case (though ISTBC on this) that those "Upgrade to PE for £xxx" offers at check in are agnostic about the class of ticket.

Welcome to V-Flyer, ausboy. We're delighted to have you with us.

Many questions such as yours can sometimes be answered very quickly. As you look around the Forum you will find the handy Search feature. By inputting the term "upgradeable fares" you would find this gem.

We also publish "The V-Book" an excellent summary of all things Virgin Atlantic.

Again, welcome to V-Flyer.

Hi all, thanks for your welcome to v-flyer. I was under the impression that it would be impossible. I will try my luck at check in, you never know.

Cheers

I am flying with BA on Sat, how do I find out my fare class? I was thinking there may be a small chance of an upgrade from economy as I'm a lone traveller.

Seriously though, your fare class should be on your ticket/E ticket somewhere, not flown BA for a while so unsure to exactly were, if you are unsure just give them a call and they will be able to tell you.

You say you are hoping for an upgrade, you mean a freebie or to pay for it?

Indeed, the rules say that N class can't be upgraded with miles, but it has happened and isn't an unknown event ;) That said, if it's going to happen, it will more than likely be dependent on the flight loading and you'll need to check at the airport ticketing desk/check-in on day of departure. You're probably 100% likely to be rejected in advance of this if you ring FC, unless you pay cash to upgrade to a Y/B/L fare first...

I've cash upgraded an N to PE and miles upgraded an N at MCO on two occasions. I've been turned down twice to do a miles upgrade at LGW (with a 'this is never possible' response both times), but have been allowed to do cash.

I believe (thats because somebody told me[:I])the reason you will of been able to do miles upgrades at MCO and not at LGW is because the staff at the non-uk airports aren't so aware of whats allowable with each fare so you are more likely to get away with it where are the UK staff no all the restriction and therefore won't allow it - with miles anyways, as has been mentioned many times before, at the airport anything is possible....

It may have been the case that VS would need to move people because Y has been oversold. It could be that they will accept cash rather than moving people for free regardless of being booked into the lowest fare bucket. :)

Hmm, yes & no - whilst that can be true, I've found that staff at outposts will more than likely ask their supervisor/manager whether they can allow an upgrade, and then it's down to the supervisor/manager as to whether they know the fare codes. I've definitely seen them look up the fare code to see whether it's upgradeable, and then refuse on that basis.

Indeed. With the exception of mistakes, VS will pretty much only accept upgrades on non-upgradeable fares if it's suitable to them operationally. Likewise, even airport upgrades on upgradeable fares can be refused if there's no reward availability and it's not suitable to VS operationally.

Recently I saw an example of how VS needed to op-up folks in Y/PE (so there was an operational need), but wouldn't accept miles to upgrade my N fare - so it's not a certainty by any means.

Cheers
