21st Feb, no flaps landing at LHR

I don't think it's quite the "hush up" that this poster on PPRune suggests, but it is interesting none the less.

Check out this photo. It's of G-VFOX making an emergency landing with no trailing edge flaps into LHR as a result of a hydraulic failure.


Can say it now we know everything was ok - COOL! [y]

Quite possibly none? Back in 2001 (and things may have changed since then) we landed at Gatwick after an apparently uneventful flight from Las Vegas only to find ourselves tracked down the runway by the emergency vehicles and then shunted off to a far part of the airport. Only then were we told there had been some kind of failure on the aircraft.

I remember it well because my son had a bladder infection and it was torture for him being kept on the plane...

Hmm, wonder how fast they had to come in with that configuration? IIRC a 747 has an electrical back up system for the flaps.

Hm, with leading edge only, I'd guess they'd have a vREF of about about 170/180 kts, with an average load.

They may have dumped or held to get down to minimum fuel - which could also bring the necessary speed down by as much as 10 knots.

If indeed this was 21/2, we went to CPT on this little beauty and were delayed approx 2 hours. Now I know why.....[:$] I'm pleased to say there were no problems incidentally.....

We had a no flaps/problem with flaps landing at LGW in 1999 coming back from UVF on a VS 747-200.After we had done some rather unusual maneuvers in the stack The captain made an announcement that we would be greeted by the fire trucks and not to worry everything was fine, It would just be a fast approach. My ears have never popped so much it was indeed a very fast decent and landing.The captain sat next to us on the LGW express into London and confirmed he had had problems with the flaps, but no big deal[:0]
