I know VA do Australia now, but I am planning a trip there probably two years ahead, its goin to be a big once in a lifetime thing and I am considering trying 1st Class and sod the expense, do any of you have any experience of 1st Class on airlines that fly to Oz and which is the swankiest and very best. Or should I just be satisfied with UCS with VA.

Feel free to move this thread if its in the wrong place.

I did BA FIRST to Sydney in Feb 07, via Bangkok. Can not be faulted apart from I wish I had broken my journey in BK (But then again I had to fly from Sydney to Canberra). My work paid the J class BA fare and I upgraded with BA miles to FIRST and golly I am glad I did - such a long flight and everything was just fine.
I hope this helps - if you want to know anything else about it please drop me a message.
Thx,
Ian

Well in two years time SQ maybe flying the A380 with a whole new product. Could be fun. Hell Qantas maybe flying the bird too.

I'd say the best thing is to start saving NOW and decide closer to the time of travel since there should be new aircraft flying new first cabins by then.

I have done Oz in FC half a dozen times with BA, QF, EK and NZ. In J I have done it with KL twice and VS once.

Of course, NZ doesn't do FC anymore, but it was a great experience despite the seats being the old lay-z-boy style.

QF and BA were good but this was about five+ years ago now. I preferred QF because they were doing deeply discounted F fares via CDG, FRA and FCO in those days, as the loads in F were well down so on the segments between Europe and SIN you had at least one flight attendent each pax. They have dropped CDG/FCO and I don't think they do FC to FRA anymore. The seats in QF FC and BA FC are very similar, although the BA seats I feel are slightly more private.

EK has been my carrier of choice on this route in FC on the past two occasions with a brief sojourn to VS UC in between. This is primarily based on price together with unlimited Dom Perignon. I also chose EK because it fitted my itinerary better, allowing stopovers in Oz as well as NZ.

VS UC is OK but the immigration delays at SYD at 7am when everyone else arrives too is just awful. Choosing a carrier that arrives outside of the morning rush hour is to be recommended after a 24 hour flight. Taking a spare set of clothes and using the showers in the CH at HKG is my top tip if you do it in one hop!

Next time, if I have no need to be in NZ too, I will be going either SQ or CX. I had such a great journey on SQ in April I will have to try them again. One benefit of SQ is that you get to use the VS lounge in LHR. CX is in there because I have yet to give them a go and their reputation precedes them.

Have a good one whichever you choose.

Cheers, Howard

Egg I agree with others, save now and reserve judgement. The new QF first looks great and the roll out should mean its available to you, but then EK haven't announced their first on the 380 yet so you might want to wait and see, SQ of course have and it looks lovely. BA first is looking tired, and they haven't announced any changes (others than AVOD as part of the CW refit) but may do within two years, CX always had a good reputation and they are refitting first too ... a lot can happen between now and 2 yrs time ...

Going to Auckland in Emirates First (First time!) on the 17th so I will try and scramble a report together. As others say I recommend you wait a bit to see whats out there. If your off to SYD specifically Etihad had some tasty offers on last time i looked. Enjoy the process and excitement of searching, i did!

My advice would be (and this is regardless of airline or travel class) is split the LHR>SYD flight up be stopping over for at least 1 night in both directions. It wont cost you much more for the airfare to include stop-overs but's it's more than worth it. You then at least get 1 good nights sleep in a proper bed during your long flight.

I would never dream of flying 'non-stop' to SYD. BA/QF give you more stop-over options with VS obviously only able to offer HKG both ways.

I actually dind't find SYD too bad for immigration lines after my VS flight. I was outside the terminal in under 40 mins (and that was flying in Y as well).

Well if they offer ExY like SQ on the A345 it is not bad. Sleep, Drink, Sh!t, Eat, watch movies, work and repeat....
