Hi all,

Mulling over my options for a hol in January (in case you were wondering why I was so quiet regarding the PCP!). The plan is for gf to head home to Shanghai over xmas with me flying out on 1st Jan. We are planning to do Japan before routing back via PVG to pick up luggage!
The thought was thus:
gf LHR-PVG VS and PVG-NRT NH
me LHR-NRT VS meeting in NRT.
An issue with above is I'd be kicking my heels at NRT for 4 hours before the first NH flight arrives from PVG. So, since we're doing miles for the NRT leg (mandatory return cost even if only booking one way) I was thinking of routing via PVG and meeting gf there traveling out together on NH.
If there was a delay on the LHR-PVG flight would I be sorted out should I miss the connection? I only ask because of course I could've flown directly with VS to NRT.

Other option of course is to wait at NRT. Having never been there is there much to keep me amused? - bearing in mind I'd have my luggage with me.

Thanks very much for putting up with this drivel!

It will all depend on how you book each leg/flight. If you book them all through VS, and are on one PNR number and then you are delayed, missing your connecting flight, you will be sorted out.

If you booked your NH flight separately, then you are in theory, on your own, and it will all depend on how flexible/helpful NH are. You do also of course have your own travel insurance.

Cheers Neil - yes the intention is to book all in with VS.

One other thought if anyone knows - do I need a visa to transfer flights in PVG? I think that luggage has to be reclaimed.

If I have read it correct, then no you won't. Point 4 on this page should cover you and your plans.

Yayy! Welcome to my world! If only you weren't using miles! We do loads of these for our Japanese customers as it hardly adds to the cost of the ticket and they get to tick a box on their world itineraries!

No need for a visa to transit in PVG, NH and VS have interline baggage agreements so your bags will go straight through if you make sure you point it out at LHR. This may need to be pointed out to them as you will not be on 1 ticket.
If there are any delays this is long as VS have issued it on 1 ticket you should be fine. The problem with miles bookings is that they issue them on a seperate ticket for each route, you would have one ticket that is LHR - PVG and another one which is PVG - NRT on NH.
Technically if you miss the connections and they are on 2 tickets, you won't be looked after but FC should sort you out time difference pending!

I would rather be risking this all on a transfer in NRT because of the different attitudes to service in the two countries.

In NRT there is a fairly good landside selection of shops and things up on the 2nd floor. Some really good value food and drink there compared to BAA but not a huge amount to do.

You can also play on the arcade machines that there are a fair few of! PM for more info.
