I've just sent an email to customer services. I'll admit it's a little tongue in cheek, but I love my little extras and have way too much free time on my hands... so when my free pen breaks, I thought it only right to let Virgin know.

Here's the link to my letter: http://lloydieblog.blogspot.com/

If someone wants to copy and paste it that'd be great rather than re-directing people from here. I've tried three times on my work computer and it's having none of it for some reason. Maybe a letter to IT might be next...

Haha, brilliant!

I have to say thought, whilst the J pens are pretty and silver and made of actual metal (I think), and make fantastic gifts for people (or more specifically my Mum, who still doesn't believe I actually fly Upper), they are not my favourite. They are short and stubby and fail rest across the arch of your thumb as the longer, but lesser pens do.

Why oh why did I never think of writing.....my PE pens have done that same missle launch impersonation to me on numerous occasions[:0] Due to the obvious danger I no longer take them from the confines of the PE kit[:w]

I have to agree, I hate these pens. We went through a phase at work of using them but we either lost them and/or gave up on them. Mines lying on my bedroom floor somewhere [:(]

nb. I of course have never flown upper, as have none of my close work friends due to shocking pay. We take any free pen off Virgin as a small perk to the job and one we don't have to pay for ourselves! [:w]

Small case of company misappropriation there! I'd be very careful about what you take off an aircraft!

I did none of the taking! The only thing I may take are the love hearts out of the kids packs!

Still a case of stealing from the company! I would be very careful - VS is extremely strict on this matter and boasting about it on a public forum is far from sensible.

Lizz maybe you could take your new Pen of misappropriation[:o)] and use it to write a letter of disatisfaction regards the actual size of the pen shrinking beyond an actual usefull size[V].

cheers

I actually got some of them love hearts just the other day!

I'm not too sure I'd remember how to write a real letter anymore, what with being part of this technological generation and that even though I got not just one but TWO B's in my English GCSE's (O-levels for anyone who still gets confused!!) I have made it my duty to spend the past few years forgetting everything I know, becoming ever more blonde (in mind and not just hair colour) and telling people that I cannot magic seats into the aisles of planes.
Not to mention finding the pen in my 'floordrobe' that is my bedroom is just far too much effort!

I was going to physically write them a letter and not email but I couldn't risk the tragic irony of my one remaining working pen breaking whilst I wrote a letter complaining about the other broken one.

I do hope they take me seriously. I know I have too much free time, a penchant for freebies and a warped sense of proportion but I'm still a man with feelings.

That is an awesome letter! If I ran the company I'd arrange for a giant box of them to be sent to your offices. Think how many ceiling tiles you could destroy then ... [:)]

Thanks,

Great letter - perhaps on your February trip you could collect all three pens and then on your return perform tests under strict laboratory conditions of course to confirm your suspicions. The results could be included in your TR!

Oh thank God, I thought it was just me kept getting the dodgy purple pens. Though mine don't ping off the end like an excocet, tend more to drop off the end as I'm writting !
Great letter, agree with Jacki that you should perform some sort of test under strict conditions - perhaps you could get some sort of government funding for this - every body else seems able to get it ! Or perhaps apply for a lotto grant towards it?

Still no reply.

I'm not sure how long Virgin take to respond to pen-related enquiries but I'd always perceived them as being very hot on customer service so I can only presume there is a high level meeting to decide how to approach this issue. At least I do hope so.

Will keep you informed.

Just moments after posting this, an email has flooded in.

Dear Mr Lloyd (oh please, everyone calls me Lloydie, you can too)

Thank you for your e-mail and I apologise for the delay in getting back to you.

Thank you for your e-mail and I apologise for the delay in getting back to you.

I am sorry to read that the pen you received in your Premium Economy amenity kit when travelling with Virgin Atlantic earlier this year has now broken six months later. From what you wrote, I understand you enjoyed using that pen so I appreciate that this has frustrated you. However I am glad to read that the pen you were given when travelling in the Economy cabin has proved more robust and is still in good working order.

We thank you for your loyalty to Virgin Atlantic and look forward to welcoming you on board again next year.

Kind Regards

Well she seems nice, and I'm glad she appreciates my frustration. Alas no promise of a signed Richard Branson photo, but then I'll forgive her, because he might be having trouble with his pen. ;0)

Nice one Virgin. I'm glad you guys have a sense of humour!

they should have sent you a free pen as way of apology I recon, that's the least I'd expect!

Haha. To be honest, if it's just going to 'go nuclear' like last time, I think I'll survive (much as I loved that pen. It was a nice colour). I love that the nice lady replied and clearly took it with good grace.
