Good afternoon.

I have flights to MCO booked for next summer. Two in T and two in X.

Having just received a CC upgrade to PE I thought I'd try to use it, while upgrading a second person using miles.

I knew there was only availability on the return flight.

Spoke to FC who said all OK, but then put me on hold 'briefly'. After 10 minutes I gave up and redialled.[:(!] This time the guy said I couldn't do it as my wife (whose account had received the upgrade notification) is in X, while it is my daughter and her friend in T.

I had originally put us as the Xs so we'd get the miles. Looks like with hindsight I messed up.[:#]

Presumably no one knows a way round this?

Thanks

Trevor

I guess the only way around it is to upgrade daughter and friend but switch boarding passes on boarding so that you and the wife get the PE seats?

Thanks,
Sarah

Thanks for the response Sarah, but swopping isn't the problem.

It seems we cannot use the free CC upgrade because it's in my wife's name and it can only be used if the named person is already booked into a reward class.

I hadn't appreciated that while you can use miles to book rewards for others, you can't use upgrades in the same way.

If I'd known that this might occur I would have put my daughter in X and my wife in T.

C'est la vie.

Hmm ... I hadnt heard that before. Anyone else have experience here?

I would be tempted ask them to show you the T&C's stating this as the companion vouchers can be used for other travellers, not just the account holder. Did you check with a supervisor? I only ever used this benefit once and that was for myself but I had always assumed that it could be used in the same sort of way as a companion voucher.

Thanks,
Sarah

I agree with Sarah, this sounds strange. I know my Dad used the AmEx PE upgrade voucher for both him and my mum without any problems, all paid for with miles out of his account even though it was done as 2 separate bookings. It has mentioned so many timed that a call back to VS and another agent could well give a totally different answer, there was an example just the other day on here of that happening.

If you read the T&C for the PE upgrade voucher, it does make reference to it being a benefit for 'the main cardmember'.

It isn't very well worded, but I can read it as the cardmember is the one that has to use the voucher.

As i posted previously, i used my 2 upgrade vouchers for my in laws last year. They made the booking using their miles and i was handed the phone and agreed to the use of them on their booking. i wasn't travelling with them.(no problems no questions fron VS)

Tickets were issued and they flew without any problems.

Seems different FC staff do things differently.

And of course the 'main cardmember' would ultimately have been the beneficiary. Actually I believe I am the first named on the credit cards, but I transferred the miles to my wife some time ago. Either way it wouldn't help.

I may try again, as it was going well with the first guy until he disappeared on an elongated tea break, but I don't hold out much hope.

I'll just glance wistfully towards the stairs as we board the flight.

Thanks for all comments.
