From reading the VS site you get the standard PE hand baggage allowance - so
Economy and Premium Economy passengers may take 1 piece of hand baggage on board. Individual dimensions not to exceed 23 x 36 x 56cm, (approx 9 x 14 x 22 inches) and 13lb/6kg in weight.

complete info here

As AU you get an extra checked bag so 3 * 23KG instead of 2 * 23KG

Hi Richard

Was trying to take just one case weighing up to 12kg and another small carry on, as during my stay in the US I've got internal flights with American Airlines who have an 18kg hand luggage policy!

How big is the case? Weight is important in consideration of the overhead lockers, but size is more of the concern.

Saying that, when you land in the US you'd have to collect your luggage as port of entry so it wouldn't be the end of the world if you have to check it in for the VS flight, as you can then drag it onboard for your AA flight.

Apple, just make sure that you check-in at upper or use the automated system. I work on the principal that as long as the bag fits no worries! Only once when I had a ticket change and had to go to the counter at lhr did I get someone who made me check it... I also travel with a briefcase or rucksack and have never had an issue taking them both on.

I was stopped a couple of months ago when flying PE to Sydney.

The OLCI was down, so went to the UC desk, I said I had no bag to check-in, just a carry on.

I was asked to pop my bag on the scales, it came to 8kg. I was told the bag would have to be checked in as it was over the 6kg allowance. I remembered that I had my laptop in the bag, and a few magazines, took them out and voila, the weight was bang on the 6kg.
I was eventually allowed to take the bag as carry-on.

I would say if you can check in online, you should be ok, as long as its not that heavy you are struggling to lift it into the overhead bins

Don't forget it's not necessarily the WEIGHT that is of a concern but the SIZE(s) of the bag(s).

You won't be pleased if you find once on board that 'your' space has been taken up by other people and vice versa.

I have had my hand luggage checked on a number of occasions at checkin as a Au member. The carry on was of a normal size.

I personally think the 6KG limit is a bit on the mean side. My laptop and bag + paperwork is never within those limits.
